Where will Cam Newton and Jameis Winston land?

The 2020 NFL free-agency period is in full swing, and it has already been a whirlwind. Between blockbuster trades and massive signings, there is no shortage of storylines.

Several teams made moves for quarterbacks. The Indianapolis Colts signed Philip Rivers, and the Carolina Panthers brought in Teddy Bridgewater, but the biggest news of all came when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers inked Tom Brady.

Those signings leave major questions for two quarterbacks who were drafted No. 1 overall. Where will Cam Newton and Jameis Winston be playing next season?

Cam Newton

Bridgewater's signing sealed the deal for Newton's departure, which was already in the works after head coach Ron Rivera was fired. But Newton is not a free agent, so the Panthers will need to find a suitor in the trade market. He is in the final year of his contract, so every team looking for a one-year replacement will be in the market.

The Chicago Bears made a ton of sense, but they just traded for Nick Foles. The Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots, who both lost their franchise quarterbacks, could still be a good fit for Newton.

The dark-horse team that could be involved in a trade Newton is the Washington Redskins. They just signed Rivera as their head coach, and even though they want Dwayne Haskins to be their future at QB, he is clearly not ready yet. Look for the Redskins to make a run at Newton.

Jameis Winston

Winston’s situation is quite different from Newton’s. Winston is an unrestricted free agent. Before the Brady signing, there was a good chance Winston could return to Tampa, but now he will be looking for a new town.

There is a good chance Winston will remain in Florida. Both the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking for quarterbacks. The Dolphins will likely be in the range to draft either Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert. The Jaguars have Gardner Minshew, but he struggled down the stretch last season. Jacksonville may be looking for another option to have a preseason battle for the starting role.

Like Newton, the Chargers and Patriots are also options for Winston. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers are an outside-the-box team that makes sense. Ben Roethlisberger is nearing the end of his career, and injuries are starting to pile up. Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges are not the long-term answer. Winston can easily slide into a backup role behind Big Ben, then take over when Roethlisberger retires.
