Cincinnati Bengals Team History
The Cincinnati Bengals were founded in 1966 by former Browns coach, Paul Brown. He was let go by the Browns and proceeded to form and coach the Cincinnati Bengals as the new franchise in the AFL. Brown coached the team until 1975. Cincinnati was chosen as the location for the AFL’s expansion franchise as the city is located close enough to draw from surrounding markets in Dayton, Lexington, and Louisville. When given the opportunity to expand in Ohio, Paul Brown looked at both Columbus and Cincinnati but chose Cincinnati for financial reasons and due to an agreement with the city that provided a stadium.
The Cincinnati Bengals have a particul reputation in the NFL today, and it’s not one to hang their hat on. The Bengals made playoff appearances from 2011-2015 without winning a single one of their playoff games. Throughout all of these appearances and playoff losses, the Bengals retained current head coach Marvin Lewis while shuffling an array of coordinators and specialist coaches. The early 2010s were one of the most consistently successful decades for the franchise, but many consider their best years to be in the 1980s where they made two Super Bowl appearances in 1981 and 1988. They faced the San Francisco 49ers both times and lost both games.
The 1990s and 2000s were considerably tough for the Bengals, and they went fourteen years without posting a single winning record. The owner and acting General Manager, Mike Brown, was rated amongst the worst owners in all of professional, American sports. The team signed, released, and retained a number of problematic players during this time period. The 2010s turned that fortune around and led the Bengals to rise in popularity. Lewis’s arrival in 2003 makes him the NFL’s second-most tenured coach behind Bill Belichick. Regardless of Marvin Lewis’s lack of success in his playoff appearances, Mike Brown has retained the coach and the pair look to make the 2018 season one to build on for the future of the franchise.
After a 7-9 SU and 9-7 ATS season, few changes were made to the key parts of the roster and the Bengals hope that this group will be able to step out of the shadow of their other big rival - the Pittsburgh Steelers.
