NFL Week 10: Eagles vs. Giants odds, preview, and pick

A pivotal NFC East showdown takes place on Sunday, when the first-place Philadelphia Eagles (3-4-1) travel to the Big Apple to face the Giants (2-7). New York is in last place in the division, but could make a big move in the standings with a victory over their rivals.

Can Philly open up a lead on the division?

The NFC East is absolutely abysmal in 2020, but someone has to win it. The question is, does anybody really want to? Right now, the Eagles are the only team anywhere close to a .500 record, with three wins and a tie in their eight games. A win over the Giants on Sunday would push them even closer to a likely division crown and a playoff spot.

The Eagles have won their last two games, defeating the Giants by one point in Week 8 before defeating the woeful Cowboys last week by two touchdowns. The game was quite ugly, as Carson Wentz continues to struggle. His best game, by far, came against these very Giants, where he threw for 359 yards and a pair of scores with just one interception.

The one promising area for the Eagles has been their pass defense, which ranks fourth in the NFL in yards allowed. This should prove helpful against a Giants offense that has struggled mightily

If the Eagles hope to win the division, this game is vitally important. Their schedule over the following five weeks is loaded, with the Browns, Seahawks, and Packers looking to add Philadelphia to their win column. A victory this weekend would allow them a chance to end the season with wins over division opponents and possibly take the title with only six wins.

Have the Giants started to turn it around?

The Giants have split their last four games, and each contest could have gone either way. Their two wins both came against Washington, winning by a combined four points over the two contests. Meanwhile, their defeats were by one point at Philadelphia, and a two-point heartbreaker against Tampa Bay. While some of their tough losses have seen them fall just short, last week they led by 13 points entering the fourth quarter and had to hang on for the victory.

The big difference in the two wins has been their ability to hang onto the ball. They forced five turnovers against Washington and did not yield one themselves, leading to a 7-1 turnover gap in the two games against their rivals. In the losses to Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, they committed five turnovers and were unable to overcome them.

If the Giants have any hope of somehow winning the division and making something of this season, they will have to find a way to defeat a different team. Four of their seven defeats have come by four or fewer points, including their last three. If Daniel Jones hopes to have any meaningful future with the Giants beyond this year, he needs to find a way to start pulling out wins from these close finishes.

Philadelphia vs. New York injury report

The Eagles welcomed WR Alshon Jeffery to practice for the first time all year on Wednesday, but they will likely ease him back into the lineup and he may not see many snaps this week. RB Miles Sanders is questionable after missing the last two weeks. OL Lane Johnson hopes to make his return as well, having dealt with a knee issue that has kept him out off and on this year. OL Jason Peters also is expected to return at left tackle.

The Giants appear to be in good shape for this week’s game. RB Devonta Freeman is questionable and might miss his third straight game with an ankle injury. TE Kaden Smith is in concussion protocol, and is questionable.

Eagles vs. Giants betting trends

The Eagles are 3-6 against the spread in their last nine contests, and have covered just twice in their last seven against the Giants. The total has gone Under in four of their last six games, but away from home it has gone Over in all but one of their last seven contests. Philadelphia has not done well as a favorite in their last six attempts, covering the spread just once in that span.

The Giants have not won much, but they have actually covered in five of their last six games. The total has gone Over just twice in their last six games, but has gone Over in seven of their last 10 against the Eagles. On the flip side of Philly’s struggles as favorite, the Giants don’t tend to perform well as an underdog. They have won only once in their last 16 games when being expected to lose.

Not only have they failed to beat the Eagles in more than four years, the Giants have won just four of their last 20 games overall. While they have managed to keep games close of late, they simply cannot pull them out. That said, the current line provides the valuable hook, meaning the trend of New York keeping things close and being unable to pull them out provides some value.

The Eagles are well rested and are getting key pieces back on the offensive line. Philadelphia should be able to win the game, but given the Giants' propensity for keeping things close, I would take the points and the under in this one.
