It’s mid-February, and with the exception of college basketball, it’s a pretty quiet time in professional sports.
As I write this, the NBA is on its All-Star Break, the NHL is paused for the 4 Nations Face-Off, MLB is gearing up for spring training (with pitchers and catchers already reported), and the NFL is between the Super Bowl and the annual off-season frenzy.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at the latest movement (and rumors of movement) from around the sports world!

NBA Basketball Trades and Trade Rumors
The NBA trade deadline was nearly two weeks ago, but there’s still plenty happening with one move. Mark Williams was headed to the Lakers, but Los Angeles nixed the deal after Williams failed a physical. This made the Charlotte Hornets quite upset, and they’ve apparently contacted NBA headquarters to explore their options.
The Lakers, meanwhile, compensated for that trade by signing veteran center Alex Len. He made his LA debut on February 12, when he played 22 minutes in a 131-119 road loss to the Utah Jazz. Len was a top-five draft pick back in 2023 and has played most of that time with the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings. The Kings traded Len to the Washington Wizards in February, but he was waived just a few days later.
NHL Hockey Trades and Trade Rumors
The NHL trade deadline, meanwhile, is coming up in early March. Teams have until March 7 to make moves, and some notable names may be on the market. New York Islanders center Brock Nelson becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season and may be available.
Meanwhile, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones may be willing to waive his no-trade clause for the right situation. Chicago values Jones and doesn’t want to sell for pennies on the dollar, but with a division-low 41 points, they may be in “sell” mode.
NFL Football Trades and Trade Rumors
NFL teams are beginning to have some tough conversations with veterans. The biggest “will not return” news comes from New York, as the Jets are officially moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This wasn’t surprising, but it brings an eventful two-year saga to an unceremonious end.
In other AFC East news, the Miami Dolphins have released running back Raheem Mostert. Mostert made the Pro Bowl in 2023 when the speedster totaled 1,012 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. However, he took a major step back this season, rushing for 278 yards and averaging just 3.3 yards per carry (far below his 5.0 YPC career average). Mostert turns 33 this April.
MLB Baseball Trades and Trade Rumors
In baseball news, lefty Clayton Kershaw made his return to Los Angeles official. The veteran southpaw inked a one-year deal worth $7.5 million, but don’t expect to see him in the Dodgers’ stacked starting rotation for quite a while. He’s recovering from offseason surgery and is expected to start the 2025 season on the 60-day injured list.
One of the most drawn-out sagas of MLB free agency ended this past week when Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox. The longtime Astro agreed to a three-year contract worth $120 million, and in doing so spurned a six-year offer from the Detroit Tigers.
NCAA College Sports Trades, Transfers, and Transfer Portal Rumors
Much of the smoke has cleared from the college football transfer portal, which opened in December. However, a few recent moves are notable. For example, defensive back Jadon Canady, who spent the last two seasons at Ole Miss, committed to Oregon this month. Canady played in 11 games for the Rebels this past season, totaling 38 tackles and 11 pass break-ups. Prior to Ole Miss, Canady was a starter at Tulane.
Finally, there’s still no word on the status of Jamier Johnson. He was a prominent member of the Indiana secondary this past season, but he entered the transfer portal earlier this month. Johnson had 35 tackles and a pick for the Hoosiers this past season as they made an improbable run to the College Football Playoff.
