Weekend Watch: 1999 Women's World Cup final
With nearly every major sports league suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic, fans around the world are yearning for a return to normalcy.
The sports we love will be back, but in the interim, as we wait out the virus that has turned our world upside down, it's important to stay connected to the games we love.
Our Weekend Watch feature touches on the most significant moments in sports history, and luckily for us in this modern age, many of them are viewable online, in their entirety.
1999 Women's World Cup final: China vs. United States
I'll admit this isn't the greatest selection for this series, because the game wasn't all that exciting until the end. Scoreless soccer matches can be full of excitement and intrigue, but I'm not sure this one qualifies. Through regulation time, it was pretty bland.
Things got a little hectic and desperate in added and extra time, though, as the weight of the moment stirred the crowd up with every scoring opportunity.
But we all remember the penalty kicks, and the most famous disrobing in sports history. Brandi Chastain provided the dramatic exclamation point, but let's not forget the heroic efforts that got her there, most notably Kristine Lilly's goal-line save in extra time and Briana Scurry's emotional denial in the third round of penalty kicks, which still gives me goose bumps.
So transport yourself back to a time when you were only worried about the Y2K bug and enjoy.
