The second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs heats up Friday night with two matchups. the Carolina Hurricanes hit the road to take on the New York Islanders, while the San Jose Sharks host the Colorado Avalanche.

Carolina Hurricanes (+115) at New York Islanders (-140), 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN

The Hurricanes not only came back from a 2-0 series deficit to take down the defending champion Washington Capitals in seven games, but also rallied in Game 7 itself. Down 3-1 on the road, Carolina battled back and advanced with a double-overtime victory.

The Islanders faced the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round as an under-the-radar underdog. Many felt Pittsburgh might expose New York, but the Islanders swept, and outside of a 4-3 Game 1 win, it wasn’t all that close.

In the Hurricanes-Islanders matchup, the road team is 5-1 in their last six meetings and the underdog is 5-1, but the Islanders won two of the three regular-season games.

New York is 5-1 in their last six games as a home favorite of -110 to -150. Carolina is also 1-6 in its last seven games as a road underdog.

Colorado Avalanche (+115) at San Jose Sharks (-135), 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN

Most felt the West’s top seed, the Calgary Flames, would dispense of the Avalanche, as Colorado entered the postseason as the longest shot on the board to win the Stanley Cup.

After a 4-0 Game 1 loss, it sure appeared as if those who felt Colorado got lucky to even make the playoffs were right. But the Avalanche turned things around, swept the rest of the series, and will look to spring another upset in the second round.

The Sharks mounted one of the greatest comebacks in NHL history in their 5-4 Game 7 overtime win against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, and might breathe a sigh of relief that they face Colorado in the second round and not Calgary. The Sharks went 1-2 against the Flames in the regular season, while they swept the Avalanche in three games.

San Jose is 5-1 in their last six games as a favorite, 5-1 in their last six facing a team with a losing road record, and the Avalanche are 4-24 in the last 28 meetings in San Jose.
