NHL free picks: Sabres vs. Avalanche, Penguins vs. Kings

There's an NHL prime-time doubleheader Wednesday night. The Sabres will take on the Avalanche in Colorado, and the Penguins will face the Kings in Los Angeles. Here are our betting previews for both games.

The Sabres are trending in a positive direction, which makes them appealing at big odds.
Buffalo is 5-2 in its last seven games, with four of those victories occurring as the underdog. The Sabres possess an identical record over their last seven road tilts. Buffalo's scorers have had great success over their most recent stretch, with 28 goals. Jack Eichel has led the charge, with nine points in his last seven games.

Colorado has been idle since Saturday, but the time off may not work to its advantage. The team is 5-12 in its last 17 games played on three or more days of rest. The Avs offense has been mired in a funk, with just 24 goals over its last 10 games.

The Penguins are tough to trust. They're riding a three-game losing streak, in which they've been outscored 14-5. However, finding positive trends for the Kings, the second-worst team in the league, is nearly impossible. Bettors would be wise to head to the totals market.
Pittsburgh goaltenders Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry have taken turns getting shelled during the three-game skid, but regardless of who gets the call in net, bettors should expect L.A.'s 28th-ranked offense (which recently lost Tyler Toffoli via trade) to struggle. The Kings, third in shots against per game this season, should be able to keep the Pens' slumping offense at bay at Staples Center.
Trends bettors should note the Under is 9-4-2 in L.A.'s last 15 home games, and the Penguins have gone below the total in six of their last eight road games.
