Washington Redskins Team History
The Washington Redskins were formed in 1932 and joined the National Football League during the 1966 merger. They have played in a total of 5 Super Bowls, and 6 National Championship games prior to the merger, winning a total of five league championships in their history. Washington also boasts one of the highest franchise values with an approximate worth of over $3.1 billion.
Overall the team thrived in the pre-merger era from 1936 to 1945, and during the 1980’s as well. Their most prominent Hall of Fame players include Joe Theismann, John Riggins, Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, Darrell Green, Ken Houston and Art Monk. Doug Williams, who led them to a blowout victory in Super Bowl XXII (1987) against the Denver Broncos, remains the first and only black quarterback to ever win a championship as a starter.
Current owner Daniel Snyder took over the team in 1999 by paying $800 million to the family of the dearly departed Jack Kent Cooke, who passed away in 1997. Under the guidance of Snyder, the Washington Redskins improved immediately thanks to his aggressive managerial style. The stadium was renamed FedExField in 1999 due to a sponsorship deal with Federal Express (also known as “FedEx”).
Snyder’s tenure as the owner of the Washington Redskins has been highlighted with big name coaches including Marty Shottenheimer, Steve Spurrier, Joe Gibbs, Mike Shanahan, and current signal caller Jay Gruden. However, a Super Bowl championship has evaded them with Snyder at the helm. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in 1991.
The 2017 Washington Redskins endured an injury plagued season, missing the playoffs with a 7-9 SU and ATS record, while finishing third in the NFC East.
