Seattle Seahawks History

Located in the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Seahawks have quickly risen to power in recent years to become a perennial playoff threat. They were conceived in 1976 as an expansion team and flirted with early success under head coach Chuck Knox by making the playoffs for the first time in 1983, marching all the way to the AFC Championship game where they suffered a loss to the Oakland Raiders. They returned to the playoffs the following year thanks to the presence of Hall of Fame safety Kenny Easley, who won Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The team was purchased by Ken Behring and Ken Hoffman in 1988, but eventually came in to possession of Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, who purchased the team for $200 million in 1997. Under Allen's guidance, the Seahawks have transformed in to a team worthy of national attention. Current evaluations of the Seahawks give them an estimated worth of $2.5 billion.

Allen brought in head coach Mike Holmgren to salvage the team's losing reputation, and with the help of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and 2005 MVP Shaun Alexander, the Seattle Seahawks surged in to Super Bowl XL against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They lost the game 10-21, but finally established themselves as a franchise on the rise. Holmgren left the team following the 2008 season and was replaced by Jim Mora for a single year before Pete Carroll took over.

The first major impact that Carroll had was draft Russell Wilson in the 2012 NFL Draft. With an incredible defense hailed as "The Legion of Boom" and Marshawn Lynch at running back, the Seahawks began to flash promise yet again. Fans even began calling themselves "The 12th Man" or the "12's". That number is significant to club history because the Seahawks ended the 2012 campaign with an 11-5 SU record which gave them enough momentum to return to the playoffs for the 2013 season. The Seahawks outlasted the 49ers to enter the Super Bowl where they defeated Peyton Manning and the Broncos 43-8 in one of the most lopsided Super Bowl wins in the modern era. Wilson and Carroll would deliver the Seahawks to the Super Bowl the following year, where errant play calling in the waning minutes of the game led to a starting win by the New England Patriots.

Despite a decline in personnel due to injuries and contract disputes, the Seahawks scrambled to a 9-7 SU and 6-9-1 ATS record in the 2017 season.
