The theme of rebirth best describes Ryan Tannehill's football career.

Growing up in Lubbock, Texas, the multi-sport athlete played defensive back in 10 games as a sophomore, before he transitioned to quarterback, a role he eagerly wanted to play.

As a three-star recruit out of high school, Tannehill landed at Texas A&M, where he redshirted as a freshman. As a sophomore, he lost out on the starting quarterback job and began playing receiver.

In his new position, he set a single-game freshman school record, with 210 yards on 12 catches, and earned All-Big 12 honorable mention the following year.

It wasn't until halfway through his redshirt junior season that Tannehill became the No. 1 quarterback for the Aggies. In his first start, he set a school record, with 449 passing yards, and guided A&M to a top 25 ranking.

He continued to excel at QB and was drafted No. 8 overall by the Miami Dolphins. From there, Tannehill's career almost floundered in obscurity, until an auspicious trade to the Tennessee Titans ignited his resurgence.

Now, Tannehill is back in the spotlight, as a key cog for a perennial playoff contender.

Let's examine Tannehill's ever-evolving career, as we look at his regular-season and postseason records against every NFL team.

Tannehill vs. the Arizona Cardinals

Tannehill's rookie season got off to a promising start. In Week 4, against the Cardinals, Tannehill broke the Dolphins' single-game record for most passing yards by a rookie quarterback, which Dan Marino set in 1983.

Tannehill's 431 passing yards are two shy of the NFL rookie record set by Andrew Luck in 2012.

Tannehill vs. the Buffalo Bills

Tannehill established another franchise record during his rookie season, when he rushed for 31 yards on a single play — the longest run by a Dolphins quarterback — in a Week 15 game against Buffalo.

During that matchup, Tannehill also became the fifth quarterback in franchise history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season.

By the end of the 2012 season, Tannehill also set Dolphins rookie records for passing yards (3,294), attempts (484), and completions (282).

Tannehill vs. the Houston Texans

Tannehill got his first NFL start on Aug. 20, 2012, in the season opener against Houston.

The rookie finished with 219 passing yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions — two of which were tipped at the line of scrimmage by defensive end J.J. Watt.

Tannehill had better success against the Texans in a 2015 matchup, when he became the 64th quarterback in NFL history to post a perfect passer rating (158.3). He also set the NFL record for consecutive completed passes, with 25 (spanning the first 18 passes of that game and the final seven passes from his previous game). In 2018, Philip Rivers and Nick Foles tied the record, with 25 consecutive completions in one game. 

In 2019, as a member of the Titans, Tannehill led his new team to a win against its division rival, Houston, in Week 17. The victory earned the Titans a wild card spot in the playoffs.

Tannehill finished the 2019 season with 2,742 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions, as well as 185 rushing yards and four rushing scores, in 12 games played. The QB also led the league with a 117.5 quarterback rating and 9.6 yards per pass attempt.

At the end of the season, he was named to his first Pro Bowl and received the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Tannehill vs. the Los Angeles Chargers

Tennessee's surprise run in 2019 all started in Week 7, when Tannehill was named the Titans starting quarterback. 

The 31-year-old replaced longtime starter Marcus Mariota, who owned a 2-4 record through the first six games of the season. 

Tannehill finished the game with 312 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 23–20 win against the Chargers.  

Tannehill vs. the Tennessee Titans

In the 2018 season opener, Tannehill faced his future team in his first game back since he tore his ACL ahead of the 2017 season. 

Tannehill tallied 230 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in a 27-20 victory for Miami.

The next season, Miami traded Tannehill and a 2019 sixth-round draft pick to Tennessee in exchange for a 2020 fourth-round selection and a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft.

Tannehill vs. the Baltimore Ravens

One of Tennessee's biggest playoff victories came in the Divisional Round of the 2019 season, against the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens.

In a 28-12 upset, Tannehill completed just seven passes on 14 attempts, for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while he rushed for 13 yards and another score.

After he threw for just 72 yards in the previous game, Tannehill joined Terry Bradshaw as the only player in the Super Bowl era to win consecutive playoff games with one or more touchdown passes and fewer than 100 yards passing.

The following season, Baltimore got its revenge on Tennessee, with a 20-13 win in the Wild Card Round.

Tannehill vs. the Kansas City Chiefs

At the end of the 2019 season, the sixth-seeded Titans made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, where the team met eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City.

Tennessee held a lead up until 11 seconds remaining in the first half and never regained its composure after halftime.

Tannehill went 21-of-31 through the air, for 209 yards and two touchdown passes, in the 35–24 defeat.

Tannehill vs. the New England Patriots

While playing for Miami, Tannehill went 4-7 against AFC East rival New England.

His last regular-season game against his division foe resulted in a 34-33 win, known as the "Miracle in Miami."

Down five points with seven seconds left in regulation, Tannehill threw a pass to wide receiver Kenny Stills, who lateraled the ball to receiver DeVante Parker at midfield. Parker tossed the ball to running back Kenyan Drake, who ran 52 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

The only victory against New England that may have been sweeter to Tannehill was his win in the Wild Card Round in 2019.

In Tom Brady's final game in New England, Tennessee ousted the defending Super Bowl champion, 20-13.

Tannehill threw for just 72 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. His outing marked the fewest completions and yards by a winning postseason quarterback since Joe Flacco put up 34 yards in a victory against New England the 2010 Wild Card Round.
