Pittsburgh Steelers Team History

The Pittsburgh Steelers trace their origin back to the Pittsburgh Pirates who played their inaugural season in 1933. The team immediately faced financial troubles, requiring owner Art Rooney to take drastic measures in order to make payroll each week. In 1936 Rooney won a $160,000 thoroughbred racing parlay at Saratoga Race Course in New York, which funded the franchise until 1941. Rooney sold the Steelers to Alexis Thompson in 1942 and invested half of the money into the Philadelphia Eagles, gaining 70% interest in the franchise. Soon after, Thompson and Rooney agreed to swap locations, moving the Art Rooney controlled Eagles to Pittsburgh. As of 2017, the Pittsburgh Steelers rank as the 16^th most valuable franchise in the NFL worth $2.45 billion.

The Steelers struggled in the beginning. In 1943 and 1944 the franchise was unable to field a full roster due to World War II, forcing the team to merge with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 and the Chicago Cardinals in 1944. The post-war Steelers continued to underperform, managing only two playoff appearances from 1945 to 1971.

By the 70s the Steelers began to turn things under the leadership of legendary Head Coach Chuck Noll. Noll made his mark immediately after being hired, specifically in the NFL draft. In 1969, the Steelers drafted future Hall of Fame defensive tackle “Mean” Joe Green. The following season Noll selected future Hall of Famers Terry Bradshaw and Mel Blount. The 1971 and 1972 seasons saw the Steelers add Hall of Famers Jack Ham and Franco Harris respectively. Finally, in 1974, the Steelers recorded arguably the best draft in NFL history, selecting Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster who were all eventually inducted into the Hall of Fame. Noll and the Steelers dominated the NFL in the 70s making eight consecutive playoff appearances and winning four Super Bowls in 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1979. Chuck Noll retired in 1992, handing the reigns over to defensive coordinator Bill Cowher, who would hold the position as head coach for 15 years. Cowher led the team to the playoffs in his first six consecutive seasons eventually winning a Super Bowl in 2005 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Promptly after Cowher’s retirement in 2007, the Steelers named Mike Tomlin as his replacement. Tomlin has enjoyed the same level of success as his two predecessors, making the playoffs in eight of his eleven seasons while going to the Super Bowl twice and winning it once in 2008 over the Arizona Cardinals. In 2017, the Steelers enjoyed a stellar regular season going 13-3 SU and 7-10 ATS, but ended up short of their goal falling to the Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs.
