Cardinals at Dolphins (1 p.m.): Dolphins
After losing four of its last five, Miami looks poised to bounce back with a strong showing in a favorable home spot. The return of Tua Tagovailoa will provide a boost to an offense stocked with weapons, and the Dolphins have played better defense of late, holding the last two opponents to a combined 26 points.
Arizona regressed following its first two straight-up wins, failing to cover and getting blown out in the lone road game after a win. And it’ll be ripe for a letdown after an ugly 17-15 home win over the Chargers, benefiting from a pair of controversial late calls to prevail (while recording only 145 passing yards). Ranked 27th in total defense, the Cardinals facing a surging Miami ground game that is averaging 162.3 rushing yards over the last three games, and Arizona has been held under 20 points in four of its last six contests.
Jets at Patriots (1 p.m.): Jets
We’ll hold our nose and tease the Jets in this spot. New York collapsed after leading Pittsburgh at halftime last week and got outscored 24-0 in the second half, but running back Breece Hall got involved in the offense (six catches for 103 yards) and Davante Adams caught three passes in his first game since being traded. And while Aaron Rodgers continues to struggle at times, throwing six interceptions over the last three games, he is averaging 271 passing yards over the last three contests.
We’re against New England in this spot; the Patriots are dealing with off-field distractions after first-year coach Jerod Mayo called the defense soft following last week’s debacle against Jacksonville, surrendering 25 unanswered points in a 32-16 loss. The Patriots were outgained 171-38 in rushing yards and average only 14.1 points per game, tied for second worst in the league. Look for more of the same as the Jets prove best by at least a field goal.
Saints at Chargers (4:05 p.m.): Chargers
This is a rebound spot for the Chargers, who kept Arizona relatively in check but made too many mistakes and kicked too many field goals in a tough 17-15 loss last week. After developing a formidable rushing attack early in the season, the Chargers have relied more upon Justin Herbert (349 passing yards last week) the last two games, and we’ll look for Los Angeles to break out of its scoring funk (averaging only 14 points over last four games) against a Saints defense that has allowed 34 points per game over the last four outings.
New Orleans enters with a five-game losing streak. It has no replacement for Derek Carr, with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener playing poorly last week as the Saints trailed Denver 33-3 at home before scoring a garbage touchdown with about a minute remaining. The NFL’s worst offense (outscored by a 110-50 margin over the last three games) has little hope in this spot.
Bears at Commanders (4:25 p.m.): Bears
The Bears enter with a three-game win streak, holding their last three opponents to 18 points or less over the last three games, and they get after opposing quarterbacks. Chicago ranks fifth in total defense (292 yards allowed per game), surrendering only 10 touchdowns this season, and we like the progress rookie Caleb Williams has made of late, completing 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns in a 19-point win over Jacksonville.
Rookie Jayden Daniels has taken the NFL by storm this season, leading Washington to a 5-2 record, but he was knocked out of last week’s game with a rib injury and won’t be full strength if he makes it back after missing practice through Thursday. The Commanders have thrived behind Daniels’ passing and running, but they won’t be close to as dynamic due to his injury and we’ll back the improving Bears.
Panthers at Broncos (4:25 p.m.): Broncos
Carolina received a boost when Andy Dalton replaced Bryce Young in Week 3, scoring a combined 60 points and recording its lone win over the next two games, but the Panthers have gone backward in a hurry. Washington outscored them 40-7 behind Marcus Mariota, who took over when Jayden Daniels was injured in the first quarter, and the Panthers are reeling from a defensive perspective as well, surrendering at least 34 points per game during a four-game losing streak.
The Broncos are finding a rhythm, throttling the Raiders and Saints and losing a one-score affair to the Chargers over their last three games, and it’s easy to envision Carolina continuing to struggle on both sides of the ball.
