NFL Roundtable: Adam Gase's job is safe... for now
Every week we sit down with BetAmerica Extra columnists Ashley Anderson, James Scully and Scott Shapiro to discuss the latest news from around the NFL. This week they weigh in on Adam Gase's job security, Andy Dalton's future and the suddenly surging Ravens.
Adam Gase's seat got a whole lot hotter Sunday, after a loss to the Dolphins. Do you expect the Jets to give him the ax before the season is done?
Ashley: I don’t expect the Jets to fire Gase before his first full season is complete, but I could see him out by the middle of next season. The excess of injuries exacerbated the Jets’ playoff hopes, but the loss to a team many expected to go 0-16, the Dolphins, makes Gase look questionable as a hire. Changes need to be made, though I see the Jets sticking it out with Gase in 2019.A solemn Adam Gase enters the locker room. James: No. The Jets made a mistake hiring Adam Gase, but with a number of winnable games remaining on the schedule (Giants, Redskins, Bengals and Dolphins), the first-year coach can still finish the campaign before parting ways after the season.
Scott: Despite a dreadful season where just about everything has gone wrong for the Jets, I do not expect their front office to give their head coach the ax quite yet. There just is not enough to gain with a midseason coaching change in the NFL. Look for New York’s AFC team to ride with Gase for now and then fire him immediately after the 2019 regular season.

What was your biggest takeaway from the Ravens’ 37-20 upset of the Patriots?
Ashley: The Pats clearly got used to a different caliber of competition in the first half of the season, and the Ravens exposed them in their first true test. Baltimore ran right through the Pats defense, and New England’s own rushing attack looked mediocre, as expected. It’ll be interesting to see how New England bounces back off a bye week, with the Eagles, Cowboys, Texans and Chiefs all next in line on the schedule. I think Bill Belichick will find a remedy for the issues on defense, but the offense still has a ton of work to do and can’t be fully trusted at the moment.Lamar Jackson and the #Ravens offense just dominated the #Patriots defense. What an opening possession.

James: The defense is back. Baltimore expected to have the best secondary in the NFL but struggled to contain opponents earlier this season. After acquiring Marcus Peters two weeks ago, the Ravens got Jimmy Smith back from injury last week and their improved defensive play makes a big difference.
Scott: My biggest takeaway from the Sunday night Week 9 contest is that the Patriots are far from unbeatable. Their inability to stop the run, their subpar offensive line play and their lack of playmakers gives hope to the rest of the AFC. The Patriots are still one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl but are far from a cinch.
Andy Dalton is upset the Bengals opted to bench him rather than trade him before the deadline. Where do you expect him to be for Week 1 of the 2020 season?
Ashley: His time as a Bengal is up after the 2019 season. I could see him finding a backup spot on a team with a young quarterback in development or moving to a franchise like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bruce Arians helped another former Bengal, Carson Palmer, experience a revival in the closing chapter of his career at Arizona. Arians might see potential in bringing Dalton on at Tampa Bay and giving him a shot, since Jameis Winston isn’t cutting it for the Bucs.Bengals DE Sam Hubbard on the news of Andy Dalton's benching: pic.twitter.com/AnggKquBaC

James: On another team. After 8+ years as the starter, Andy Dalton has been benched, and Cincinnati will have a high draft pick in 2020. Dalton will try to emulate journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has started games for Buffalo, New York, Miami and Tampa Bay in recent years.
Scott: I could see Andy Dalton landing as a backup quarterback for a team with a young signal caller at the helm, like the Jets or Cardinals. I also could see the veteran being signed as the starter for a team like the Chicago Bears.
