NFL Notebook: Packers hand Cardinals first loss

The Arizona Cardinals fell from the ranks of the National Football League’s unbeaten Thursday night to kick off the eighth week of the 2021 season. A recap of that contest kicks off our latest NFL Notebook!

Packers Hold On

Despite missing several offensive playmakers (most notably star wide receiver Davante Adams), the Green Bay Packers carved out a 24-14 lead early in the fourth quarter after the second touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Randall Cobb.

The Cardinals responded with a touchdown drive of their own to get within three and had a chance to win it late. However, a goal line fade to A.J. Green was intercepted in the end zone, and the Packers improved to 7-1.

Will Prescott Play?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been limited in practice this week due to a calf strain, and his status for Sunday night’s clash with the Minnesota Vikings is very much in question.

Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb said QB Dak Prescott (calf) looked like “the same Dak” in today’s practice: “He looks great. In and out of his drops. …To me, he looks perfectly fine.” pic.twitter.com/HmJJCSJA0a

Prescott most recently threw for 445 yards in an overtime win over the New England Patriots. If he’s unable to go, backup quarterback Cooper Rush will likely be under center for the current NFC East leaders.

Browns Host Steelers Sunday

Sunday’s early slate of games is topped by a showdown between bitter AFC North rivals. The Cleveland Browns will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers in what’s expected to be an emotional clash for a number of reasons.

These two teams do not like one another, and this division is a contentious one. The Steelers are currently in the cellar despite a respectable 3-3 mark, and the Browns are just a half-game up on them (but a game behind both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens).

Jameis Faces His Old Team

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston made an odd bit of history in his final year with Tampa Bay. In 2019, he became the first player ever to throw 30 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions in a single season.

He’s since assumed the starting job in New Orleans, and he’ll face the 6-1 Bucs Sunday afternoon at the Superdome.
