NFL mock draft: Ranking the 5 best quarterbacks
There is no position in the NFL more important than quarterback. It’s a position that requires both a physical skill set and a cerebral understanding of the dynamics that exist on the field.
Teams without a capable quarterback have no chance at winning in the long term, which makes the decision to draft a quarterback arguably the most important choice a team can make on draft day.
Let’s look at the five best quarterbacks in this year’s draft class.
5. Jordan Love (Utah State)
Love is an intriguing prospect because he began his college career as a two-star prospect and blossomed into a strong-armed gunner who made NFL scouts take notice.
Love had a better season statistically in 2018 than 2019. In 2018 he threw for 32 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Love possesses the physical tools, but he pushed too many balls to the other team in 2019 (17 interceptions).

4. Justin Herbert (Oregon)
Going into the 2019 season, some projected Herbert to be the No. 1 pick in 2020. He has a great frame—6-foot-6, 230 pounds—and has demonstrated, through 41 college starts in a pass-happy offense, that he has the physical abilities to do everything on the field.
In 2019 he completed 67% of his passes and threw for 32 touchdowns and six interceptions. Herbert has a high ceiling, but there were times he made predetermined reads and throws that will not work at the next level.
I'm concerned Herbert’s success was a result of Oregon’s speed and scheme against mediocre Pac-12 defenses.
3. Jacob Eason (Washington)
Eason is not the third quarterback on most draft boards, but he is on mine. The biggest knock on Eason is his inexperience and lack of good film, but the large-framed QB has all the physical tools to be a successful NFL quarterback.
As Eason continues to get more reps and comfortable with in-game situations, the troubles he experienced will lessen. At home in 2019, he had a 154.2 QB rating, which was 23 points higher than on the road.
Eason is a skilled thrower who understands the game. If he is given the opportunity, he can blossom at the next level.
2. Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama)
The former Alabama QB would have been the No. 1 overall pick had he not experienced numerous injuries during his college career. Tagovailoa should still be a top 10 pick, because his ceiling is as high as any quarterback prospect entering the NFL Draft.
His 2018 season had been the most efficient college season by a quarterback, until it was broken in 2019 by the No. 1 prospect on this list.
1. Joe Burrow (LSU)
Burrow is a lock to be the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft. He just threw for 60 total touchdowns and just six interceptions.
Burrow showed the ability to throw, run, lead, and win. He is passionate about the game but levelheaded on the field and has demonstrated he is mature enough to handle the stresses of the NFL.
He is the best prospect to enter the draft since Andrew Luck and will be a fascinating player to watch for years to come.
