New York Jets History
The New York Jets were founded in 1960 as an AFL franchise named the New York Titans. Harry Wismer represented the city of New York at the AFL meetings where the first charter franchises were founded. By 1962 Wismer and the franchise fell into insurmountable debt which lead to a five-man syndicate, headed by Sonny Werblin, purchasing the Titans for $1 million. Werblin moved the Titans home games to Shea Stadium and renamed the team the New York Jets due to the stadium’s close proximity to LaGuardia Airport. The Jets franchise currently ranks as the ninth most valuable NFL franchise worth $2.75 billion.
The Jets were largely successful in the 1960s behind Hall of Fame Quarterback Joe Namath. Drafted by the Jets in 1965, Namath would eventually go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history and lead the Jets to their only Super Bowl win in Super Bowl III, famously known for "The Guarantee" where Namath promised victory despite being an underdog. After the NFL merger in 1970, the Jets fell into a period of mediocrity until 1981 which saw the emergence of the infamous “New York Sack Exchange” defensive line. After making the playoffs four of the next six seasons, the Jets returned to another period of struggle from 1987-1997. After a 1-15 season in 1996, the Jets hired Bill Parcels who turned the team around immediately, going 9-7 the next year. After only three seasons Parcels stepped down as Head Coach, but the Jets enjoyed a boon of success making the playoffs six times from 2000-2011.
In 1999 the Jets franchise was put up for sale after previous owner Leon Hess passed away. Philanthropist Woody Johnson went on to purchase the team for $635 million. In 2017 Woody Johnson’s brother, Christopher Johnson, became co-owner of the franchise after Woody was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. In recent years the Jets have gone through another period of rebuilding posting a season winning percentage above .500 once in the past seven seasons. In 2017, the Jets went 5-11 SU and 9-6-1 ATS.
