New Orleans' Super Bowl odds continue to move after Week 1 win

The New Orleans Saints can’t seem to catch a break from officiating mistakes. Despite being on the wrong end of the referees’ incorrect call in the first half of their Monday Night Football matchup, the Saints managed to defeat the Houston Texans 30-28 in the Superdome.

One of the early favorites to contend for Super Bowl LIV, New Orleans moved up another slot on the odds board following its come-from-behind victory Monday night. The Saints were a +900 favorite in the last week of the preseason but moved up to +850 Monday before their Week 1 performance bumped them just a bit to +800.

New Orleans fell just short of a Super Bowl appearance last season because of another officiating error, when Rams cornerback Nickell Robey got away with blatant pass interference in the NFC Championship Game. The Saints would’ve received an automatic first down had the penalty been called and likely either scored a touchdown or ran out the clock for a field goal. Instead they were forced to settle for an early field goal and gave the Rams too much time to tie the game in regulation.

There is no question the Saints are using last year’s season-ending blunder as fuel in 2019. They’re on a mission to make it one step further to Super Bowl LIV and claim the title many thought they deserved last season. Quarterback Drew Brees’ impending retirement in a year or so is added incentive to get the job done now.

Next week the Saints get the chance to meet their playoff adversary, the Rams. Should New Orleans knock off LA on the road, it might just move up to the No. 2 spot in the Super Bowl odds, currently occupied by the Kansas City Chiefs, and see their price lowered even further.

If you’re not high on the Saints, another team to consider betting is the Eagles. Philly got off to a slow start against the Washington Redskins and trailed until the end of the third quarter in Week 1. The team has the talent to return to biggest stage if all its players can stay healthy, so the value is there to place a futures bet at +1050.
