Las Vegas Raiders Team History

The Las Vegas Raiders franchise was founded on January 30, 1960 as the eighth and final AFL charter member. In 1962 the Raiders would make arguably the most important decision in franchise history, hiring Al Davis as Head Coach. Davis would eventually go on to purchase 10% of the franchise in 1966 after the AFL-NFL merger announcement eliminated his role as AFL Commissioner. Davis gained control of team operations in 1972 and eventually went on to become majority owner of the franchise in 2005. As of 2017 the Raiders franchise is valued at $2.3 billion which ranks 19^th in the NFL.

During the first three seasons the Raiders only managed to win a total of nine games, prompting the organization to hire Al Davis after the 1962 season concluded. Davis immediately turned the team around and began to build a winner. In 1966, Davis was tapped for the AFL Commissioner position. As a result, the organization hired John Rauch to take over as Head Coach. Rausch would go on to win the team’s first and only AFL championship in 1967.

In 1969, just before the merger, the Raiders hired John Madden, a head coach who would become an icon. Madden led the team to a sustained period of success from 1967 – 1979. As a head coach, Madden recorded ten consecutive winning seasons and one Super Bowl victory in 1976 as head coach. In 1979, John Madden stepped down as to pursue a career in broadcasting, paving the way for Tom Flores. Flores went on to win two Super Bowls with the Raiders in 1980 and 1983.

During the 1970's and 1980's, the Raiders had some of the best concentrations of NFL talent the league has ever seen. Future Hall of Fame players Jim Otto, George Blanda, Willie Brown, Fred Biletnikoff, Art Shell, Howie Long, and Marcus Allen would adorn the Raiders trademark silver and black during the period.

In 1982 Al Davis moved the team to Los Angeles after he was unable to make upgrades to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The team called L.A. home for twelve years before Davis moved the team back to Oakland in 1995. The 90s and early 2000s saw the franchise take a sharp decline from their dominance in previous decades. Since moving back to Oakland, the franchise has only managed to make the playoffs four times and appear in the Super Bowl once.

After Davis’ passing in 2011, his son Mark Davis assumed ownership and handle the operation of the franchise. In 2012, Mark hired the Raiders’ first general manager since 1962, Reggie McKenzie. After hiring and firing two head coaches in four years, McKenzie elected to bring John Gruden out of retirement to lead the Raiders for a second time in 2018. This would be Gruden's second run with the team as he had previously served as their coach from 1998-2001. Gruden inherits a team that went 6-10 SU and 5-9-2 ATS in 2017.
