Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Wins, History, Appearances, and More
The Kansas City Chiefs, winner of Super Bowl LVII, will attempt to become the ninth team to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles as they continue their playoff journey on Saturday in an AFC Championship Game showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.
Dating back to the first Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers (Super Bowl I and II), Miami Dolphins (VII and VIII), Pittsburgh Steelers (IX and X; XIII and XIV), San Francisco 49ers (XXIII and XXIV), Dallas Cowboys (XXVII and XXVIII), Denver Broncos (XXXII and XXXIII), and New England Patriots (XXXVIII and XXXIX) have each celebrated consecutive Super Bowl victories, with the Steelers the only franchise to do it twice. No team has achieved a Super Bowl three-peat.
Kansas City and quarterback Patrick Mahomes have been a centerpiece of the postseason since 2020, when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers. Since then, Kansas City has appeared in two of the last three Super Bowls. The Chiefs returned to the NFL's biggest stage in 2021, when they failed to defend their title in a 31-9 defeat to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The following year, Kansas City was knocked out by the 2022 Super Bowl runners-up, the Cincinnati Bengals, in the AFC championship before K.C. again hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in 2023, in Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl wins
Super Bowl IV: Vikings vs. Chiefs
Date: Jan. 11, 1970
Final score: Kansas City 23, Minnesota 7
Location: Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana
In the final game before the AFL and NFL officially merged to form today's NFL, the Chiefs redeemed an earlier loss in Super Bowl I, lifting the Lombardi Trophy following a 23-7 win over NFL member Minnesota. Kansas City also became the second team, after the Packers, to appear in more than one Super Bowl, but K.C.'s glory would be short-lived, as the franchise endured a significant playoff drought in the decade and a half to come. Following their first Super Bowl title, the Chiefs did not win another playoff game until 1991, and they failed to reach the postseason entirely from 1972 to 1985.
Quarterback Len Dawson missed most of the season leading up to Kansas City's inaugural Super Bowl championship after he suffered a leg injury earlier in the year. Backup QB Mike Livingston spearheaded a six-game win streak before Dawson's return in Week 8. The Chiefs played all three of their playoff games on the road, knocking off the reigning Super Bowl champions, the New York Jets, and Joe Namath in the Divisional Round before defeating the Oakland Raiders, 17-7.
In Super Bowl IV, Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud was a key factor, with three field goals and a pair of extra-point kicks in the 23-7 win. Running back Mike Garrett and receiver Otis Taylor each recorded a touchdown as well.

Super Bowl LIV: 49ers vs. Chiefs
Date: Feb. 2, 2020
Final score: Kansas City 31, San Francisco 20
Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
Fifty years after their first Super Bowl win, the Chiefs secured a second title behind Patrick Mahomes in 2020. Then 24 years old, Mahomes helped Kansas City rally from a double-digit deficit to the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV by leading the Chiefs down the field to score 21 straight points in the final 6:13 of regulation. Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP at the conclusion of the 31-20 victory.
The Chiefs trailed in each of their two prior playoff games that season. They found themself in a 24-0 hole to the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round before regrouping to win 51-31. After going down 17-7 to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game, Kansas City turned it around to prevail 35-24.
The victory in Super Bowl LIV marked a return to the big game for Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who had previously led the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX, where they lost 24-21 to the Patriots in 2005. He has a ring as an assistant for the Packers in 1996.
Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs vs. Eagles
Date: Feb. 12, 2023
Final score: Kansas City 38, Philadelphia 35
Location: State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona
Making their way back to the title game for the third time in four seasons, the Chiefs earned the franchise's third Super Bowl win by defeating Reid's former team, the Eagles, 38-35 in Arizona in 2023. Despite playing on an injured ankle, Mahomes completed 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and received his second Super Bowl MVP.
The game was also significant in that Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce faced his brother Jason Kelce, the All-Pro center for Philadelphia. It was the first time two brothers competed against each other in the Super Bowl, not counting John and Jim Harbaugh squaring off as head coaches in Super Bowl XLVII.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl losses
Super Bowl I: Chiefs vs. Packers
Date: Jan. 15, 1967
Final score: Green Bay 35, Kansas City 10
Location: Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California
Kansas City appeared in the first ever Super Bowl, then referred to as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The term "Super Bowl" was actually coined by main founder of the American Football League and Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, and was allegedly inspired by the then-popular Super Ball toy.
The 1967 Super Bowl was the only one to be telecast by two TV networks and used two different footballs. It's also the only one to not sell out.
In a matchup between Bart Starr and the Packers, the Chiefs struggled against the legendary franchise, managing a touchdown and a field goal in the first half before being shut out in the second.
The Packers, behind iconic coach Vince Lombardi, went on to win Super Bowl II as well. The Chiefs failed to make the playoffs the next season, then lost in the Divisional Round in 1968 before getting over the hump to win the franchise's first title in 1969.
Super Bowl LV: Chiefs vs. Bucs
Date: Feb. 7, 2021
Final score: Tampa Bay 31, Kansas City 9
Location: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida
A year after the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV, Mahomes and Co. clashed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady in his first year with the Bucs after a storied career with the Patriots. Despite being favored by three points, the Chiefs fell 31-9 as Brady won his record seventh Super Bowl title.
Kansas City failed to record a touchdown and scored all nine points on field goals by Harrison Butker. Mahomes was intercepted twice in a game Tampa Bay dominated on its home field of Raymond James Stadium.
Other Kansas City Chiefs championship titles
Prior to the Super Bowl, the Chiefs also won the 1962 AFL Championship in the franchise's third season, when they were known as the Dallas Texans. Kansas City also won the AFL Championship in 1966 and 1969, the final year of the American Football League.
