Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers favored to meet in Super Bowl LV

There are just 16 possible matchups left for Super Bowl LV as we head into the divisional round this weekend. The top seeds in each conference – the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC and the Green Bay Packers in the NFC – are the most likely teams to make it to Tampa Bay for the big game, according to oddsmakers. Chiefs/Packers is available at +330 in the “Name The Finalists” market. But is that the best bet available to the public? We’ll do some handicapping below.

Chiefs have significant hurdles to overcome

The Chiefs, who have failed to cover in eight straight games dating back to Nov. 1, drew a Sunday matchup with a Cleveland Browns team that seems to be peaking at the right time.

Assuming they win that game, they could face the Buffalo Bills, who have quickly become a daunting presence in the AFC with teams struggling to contain the Josh Allen-Stefon Diggs connection.

With two potential landmines to contend with in their own conference, Patrick Mahomes and company do not look like a great bet at a short price to reach Super Bowl LV.

Packers should beat Rams, but Saints, Bucs could pose problems

The Packers drew what looks like the easiest matchup of the divisional round, as they host a Los Angeles Rams team with a banged-up quarterback in Jared Goff and a hurting Defensive Player of the Year candidate in Aaron Donald.

However, the winner of the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers showdown could give Green Bay fits.

Aaron Rodgers and company beat the Saints 37-30 in Week 3 this season, but New Orleans didn’t have Michael Thomas out wide to stretch the field. The Packers’ stoppers allowed Drew Brees to toss three touchdowns, and surrendered 197 all-purpose yards to running back Alvin Kamara.

The Saints’ defense has also gotten a lot stronger since the start of the season, so don’t expect Rodgers to toss three touchdowns or get sacked only once like he did in Week 3.

If the Bucs advance, bettors should note that Tom Brady and company trounced Green Bay 38-10 in Week 6.

Bettors should back Bills/Saints at better odds

A Bills/Saints matchup in Super Bowl LV, a +900 proposition, looks like the wisest wager on the board.

The Bills’ offense is good enough to contend with any team in the AFC, as they were second in the NFL during the regular season by points per game (31.3).

The Saints beat the Bucs twice in the regular season, so they should handle them again at home, setting up a potential date with the Packers. That looks like the biggest hurdle to clear in order to cash, so a Bills/Packers hedge play at +750 might be smart.
