Denver Broncos Team History

The Broncos were founded when minor league baseball owner Bob Howsam was awarded a charter team in the AFL. Their first game was a win over the Boston Patriots with a score of 13-10. The team then went on to become the first AFL team to ever defeat an NFL franchise beating the Detroit Lions 13-7. After the founding of the franchise in 1959 the Broncos had a rough go in the 1960s going 39-97-4. Signing superstar Floyd Little helped the franchise stay afloat in 1967 and Little went on to be an All-Pro and instrumental member of the Denver community. The Broncos held their own but missed the playoffs in many of their following seasons, including throughout the John Ralston era of the 70's. It wouldn’t be until the era of one of the NFL’s greatest QBs that the Broncos found notable success once again.

In 1983 the Baltimore Colts had the first overall pick and John Elway was sitting at the top of everyone's boards. However, Elway was so emphatic about not playing for the Colts that he famously threatened to play for the New York Yankees in the MLB if he was selected. Believing that they had a chance to convince him otherwise, Baltimore selected Elway first overall int he 1983 NFL Draft. Elway continued to push for a trade, and the Colts eventually submitted, dealing the Stanford quarterback to Denver. Once there, Elway took the Denver Broncos to six playoffs, five AFC West titles, and three AFC Championships under Dan Reeves. In 1995 Mike Shanahan became the team’s head coach and drafted Terrell Davis.

The 1997 and 1998 seasons for the Broncos resulted in back-to-back Super Bowl wins for John Elway including a win against the Atlanta Falcons who were then coached by Reeves.

Elway would return to the Denver Broncos in 2011 as the general manager, and was pivotal in acquiring a suddenly available Peyton Manning. The Broncos managed to earn another Super Bowl trophy in 2015 at Super Bowl 50. The team defeated the Carolina Panthers and sent Peyton Manning into retirement on the highest note possible in the NFL. Since then the team has been rebuilding its roster to return to a competitive landscape in the National Football League.
