Brazil to host NFL game in 2024: What to know about Arena Corinthians

On Wednesday afternoon, the NFL announced that São Paulo, Brazil will host an NFL game in 2024, the first international NFL matchup to be held in South America.

Set for kickoff at Arena Corinthians, the Brazil contest will mark one of five regular-season games played internationally in 2024. London will host three games — two at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one at Wembley Stadium — while Germany will welcome the NFL to Allianz Arena in Munich for a second straight year.

Madrid, Spain was also in the running as an international host in 2024, but as Peter O'Reilly, NFL executive vice president of club business, international and league events, told NFL.com, the opportunity to play in a new continent for the first time helped Brazil get the nod. Madrid could host a game as early as 2025.

The teams who will play in Brazil, as well as London and Germany, will be announced in early 2024. With Brazil counting 38 million NFL fans, the country made sense as the next stop for the league's international series. Neo Quimica Arena is Arena Corinthians' other name

Home of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, commonly referred to as Corinthians, the venue is also called Neo Quimica Arena for sponsorship reasons and is the 11th largest stadium in Brazil and fifth-largest used by soccer teams in the top tier of the Brazilian League.

Arena Corinthians was a 2014 World Cup host

In 2014, Arena Corinthians hosted the opening ceremony and six FIFA World Cup matches, including the opening match between Brazil and Croatia. Called Arena de São Paulo for the World Cup, the stadium added temporary seating, as FIFA requested at least 65,000 seats for the opening match.  Arena Corinthians' normal capacity is about 49,000 people — slightly less than the capacity for the NFL Frankfurt games played this season.

The Olympics visited Arena Corinthians in 2016

In 2016, the Summer Olympics came to Arena Corinthians for both the men's and women's soccer tournaments. Among the matches played were the women's quarterfinal, plus the bronze medal match between Brazil and Canada, along with the men's quarterfinal between Brazil and Colombia, and the men's semifinal between Nigeria and Germany.
