Bettor's Remorse: The 5 NFL teams that burned me in Week 4
It was the best NFL Sunday so far this season for a lot of sportsbooks, so there was plenty of remorse to go around for bettors. Public teams like the Chiefs, Rams, Patriots and Cowboys all failed to cover, and the Rams and Cowboys lost outright.
Underdogs went 11-4 and nine won outright. It was the kind of day that bookmakers live for and the public wants to forget—the kind of day that makes us grateful for alcohol.
Let’s let off some steam and get to the details.
Mahomes was too much in the end, as he orchestrated a game-winning drive in the final two minutes to give the Chiefs a 34-30 win. This Chiefs defense, especially on the back end, could be the team’s Achilles heel. The Over is now 3-1 in Chiefs games this season.

Kansas City Chiefs (-7.5) vs. Detroit Lions
The Chiefs were perhaps the most popular play for the public Sunday, especially in teasers, but the Lions continued their surprising good play as Matt Stafford went toe-to-toe with reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes. After a tough start Kansas City gave its backers hope when Bashaud Breeland returned a fumble 100 yards to give the Chiefs a 20-13 lead, but the Lions came right back.Mahomes was too much in the end, as he orchestrated a game-winning drive in the final two minutes to give the Chiefs a 34-30 win. Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Los Angeles Rams (-9)
In what coaching wunderkind Sean McVay called a “wake-up call,” the Rams seemingly forgot to set their alarm clocks and fell behind 21-0 against Tampa Bay. It was the kind of start that gives favorite bettors nightmares, and although the Bucs’ pathetic pass defense made it interesting late, Tampa Bay held off Los Angeles and pulled off the upset as a +350 underdog. Is Bruce Arians starting to work his “QB whisperer” magic with Jameis Winston? pic.twitter.com/bJVye5GU0o

It was an uncharacteristically sloppy game for the Rams, especially for their $134 million quarterback, Jared Goff, who threw three interceptions and fumbled the game away late, even though he accumulated 517 yards passing. How average would Goff be without McVay? I’m convinced he would be a bust, but that’s a discussion for another day. The Rams will look to have a short memory as they head to Seattle.
New England Patriots (-7) vs. Buffalo Bills
It looked to be another walk in the park for Tom Brady and the boys, after Matthew Slater returned a blocked punt to make it 13-0 in the first quarter. But that stout Buffalo defense held tough the rest of the way, as the Bills made it a game late, before quarterback Josh Allen was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter by a helmet-to-helmet hit.JC JACKSON BLOCKS THE PUNT AND MATTHEW SLATER RECOVERS FOR THE PATRIOTS TOUCHDOWN!!! #GOPATS https://t.co/YY1x3qHEIH

Brady was unable to get anything going on offense all afternoon, as bettors were ultimately done in by a missed extra point in the first quarter by the usually reliable Stephen Gostkowski, who has been shut down for the season to undergo hip surgery.
This week Frank Reich’s club will return to a familiar underestimated role, as the Colts travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs as an 11-point underdog. Even though the Colts are nursing injuries to several key players, the possible return of star linebacker Darius Leonard could be a big boost. I’ll look for Indianapolis to bounce back with a determined effort against the Chiefs, in a contest where the Colts can lean on their talented offensive line.
The Saints made up for the loss of Brees with inspired defense. Ezekiel Elliott was stuffed at the line of scrimmage all night and Dak Prescott never got going. New Orleans made the Cowboys offense look like the same pedestrian unit we’ve seen too many times during the Jason Garrett era.
This is one of those games, when it is 38-0 at halftime and you’re holding a worthless Maryland moneyline ticket in your hand.
Oakland Raiders vs. Indianapolis Colts (-5.5)
Coming off two solid wins against the Titans and Falcons, Indianapolis was a little too comfortable Sunday and came out flat. A hungry Raiders team jumped out to a 21-7 lead, an advantage they never surrendered, even though the resilient Colts tried to make it a game late. This week Frank Reich’s club will return to a familiar underestimated role, as the Colts travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs as an 11-point underdog. Dallas Cowboys (-2.5) vs. New Orleans Saints
With the Cowboys playing some of the best football in the league to start the season and Drew Brees in street clothes, this was supposed to be easy money. The Saints made up for the loss of Brees with inspired defense. Bonus college game: Penn State vs. Maryland (+6.5)
