Baltimore Ravens Team History

Brilliantly named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem The Raven via fan-driven contest, the Baltimore Ravens are the result of many attempts to bring the NFL back to the city of Baltimore after the departure of the Colts to Indianapolis. When being passed over during NFL expansions to St. Louis, Charlotte, and Jacksonville, the Ravens established a strong ownership group and local ordinance backing including a new $200 million stadium. The city was lobbied against heavily by Washington Redskins owner who was opposed to the idea of another NFL franchise so close to his own. This led to public backlash and local media campaigns against the Redskins owner which put pressure on the NFL to expand back into Baltimore whose owners had gathered a new group of investors.

The Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell heard the cries of the city of Baltimore and in an agreement with the city of Cleveland left the Browns history, franchise, and branding in Cleveland while taking his talents to Baltimore. The Ravens made Memorial Stadium their home, which had been the home of the Baltimore Colts previously before moving into M&T Bank Stadium in later years.

Baltimore hit the ground running drafting two future Hall of Fame players in Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis. Their initial season ended with a 4-12 record, but they took a step forward in 1998 going 6-9-1 and beating their local rivals in Washington 20-17. After three consecutive losing seasons the Ravens made a coaching change bringing in Brian Billick. With NFL pressure on Modell to sell the team to an owner who could turn them around financially, the Ravens brought in Steve Bisciotti as majority owner.

In 2000 the Baltimore Ravens faced the New York Giants in the Super Bowl and became the first Wild Card team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl with a final score of 34-7. In 2002 the team drafted Ed Reed, who went on to be one of the league’s best all-time safeties. The franchise then brought in current coach John Harbaugh in 2008, current quarterback Joe Flacco, and running-back Ray Rice. This roster, with the addition of Terrell Suggs in 2003, and almost a decade of experience together, pulled in the Ravens’ second and only other Super Bowl victory in 2012 against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Ravens have been one of the NFL’s best-coached and most consistently competitive franchises. Their 2018 season looks to take advantage of a fairly weak AFC North Division as they make yet another run at a playoff spot behind John Harbaugh and newly drafted talents like TE Hayden Hurst, QB Lamar Jackson, and TE Mark Andrews.
