The ultimate Phoenix Suns quiz

Professional basketball in Phoenix may seem like a slam dunk these days, but that wasn’t always the case. Back in 1967 when the idea was first pitched to the NBA, league commissioner J. Walter Kennedy dismissed the Arizona city as being "too hot" and "too small" to support a team.

Luckily cooler heads prevailed, and the Suns joined the Association as an expansion franchise for the 1968-69 season. Phoenix struggled during its inaugural campaign, but the addition of future All-Stars Dick Van Arsdale and Paul Westphal turned the club into a bona fide contender, and the Suns reached the NBA Finals in 1976, where they lost in six games to the Boston Celtics.

Phoenix’s deep postseason run set the stage for eight straight playoff appearances. However, the Suns wouldn’t return to basketball’s biggest stage until 1993, after the franchise acquired future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. "The Round Mound of Rebound" led Phoenix to 62 victories that season, and the Suns came within one win of toppling Michael Jordan and the Bulls.

Now, 28 years later, the Suns are back in the NBA Finals again thanks to the exploits of newly acquired superstar Chris Paul and emerging young stars Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton. The talented trio powered Phoenix to the second best record in the league during the regular season, and find themselves on the precipice of winning the first championship in franchise history.
