The ultimate Basketball Hall of Fame quiz
Madison Square Garden may be the "Mecca" of basketball, but Springfield, Massachusetts is it's undeniable birthplace. The sleepy Northeastern city staked its place in history in December 1891, when a Canadian-born phys ed instructor named James Naismith introduced the game at the local YMCA. "Basket Ball", as the sport was then known, spread like wildfire, and within three years was being played in more than a dozen countries worldwide.
Springfield has always taken its role in the invention and development of basketball seriously, so when the time came to erect a shrine to Naismith's game, the so-called "City of Firsts" was the natural choice.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame opened to the public on Feb. 17, 1968, and has since captivated millions of fans who have come to honor the men and women who have shaped the game.
