NASCAR’s best teams for 2020
Every sport has teams that consistently do well. NASCAR is no different. We've sifted through mountains of data and race results to identify the top three teams heading into the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Joe Gibbs Racing (Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Erik Jones)
No team was better in the 2019 season than Joe Gibbs Racing. We don’t really see it slowing down in 2020. During the 2019 season Gibbs picked up the championship with Kyle Busch and racked up 19 wins during the 36-race season. The team led for more than 4,000 laps and had an average finish of 11.10 among all four drivers.Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch. The team was only able to capture four poles, but when the pay window opened up the drivers were there to cash a ticket. In the final race of the 2019 season, Joe Gibbs Racing had three of its four drivers fighting for the trophy. The team is never going to be great at qualifying, but don’t hold that against them. They know how to get it done in the race. Expect more of the same in 2020, and consider a Joe Gibbs driver each week.
Penske will always be a team that specializes at certain tracks. It runs well at superspeedways, two-milers, and short tracks. The results are the same every year. The team will win five to eight races a year, and it is going to be in the mix for a championship. These drivers have the ability and quality to win a championship, but identifying which of the three can do it is the tricky part. One of them will get hot in 2020. Who will it be?
The team had an average finish of 15.44 in 2019, and those numbers should improve with another year of seasoning for its young core. You’re going to get good odds with these drivers to start the season, but it won’t last all year long. Look for this team to double its win total from a year ago and have at least two of their drivers competing for a championship at the end of the year.
Team Penske (Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney)
Team Penske is a quality Ford Racing team. During the 2019 season Penske was able to capture six wins with 2,406 laps led. The three drivers had an average finish of 12.44. A little off Joe Gibbs Racing but still quality numbers.Penske will always be a team that specializes at certain tracks. It runs well at superspeedways, two-milers, and short tracks. Hendricks Motorsports (Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, William Byron, Alex Bowman)
You could argue Stewart-Haas Racing should be in this spot. However, we like where Hendricks Motorsports is heading. In 2019 Hendricks was able to capture four wins as a team and led 1,165 laps. The strong point of this team in 2019 was qualifying, as it captured 10 poles. This year should be more of the same. The team had an average finish of 15.44 in 2019, and those numbers should improve with another year of seasoning for its young core.
