UFC Fight Night: Hermansson vs. Vettori betting odds and preview
Marvin Vettori (15-4-1) steps in for a major opportunity against top-ranked middleweight Jack Hermansson (21-5-0) on Saturday, Dec. 5 at UFC Fight Night. Both men are vying for a world title shot, and this bout is sure to thin out the herd.
BetAmerica has the betting odds and picks you need for the big fight.
A sub of a sub
Vettori comes into this fight as a substitute for Kevin Holland, who originally subbed in for Darren Till. He’s 3-0 after putting up a spirited effort in defeat against Israel Adesanya two years ago. While he hasn’t fought any major names since then, he’s opened up as a slight favorite over the streaking Hermansson.
Unlike the previously booked foes, Vettori is a mat technician with a solid chin. This fight against Hermansson is his first major fight in some time, but he’s a troublesome match up. Should he win, Vettori will unexpectedly find himself catapulted up the rankings and in prime position for a major fight.
Hermansson needs to change his game plan
Hermansson’s last three wins have come by submission. Considering Vettori’s diligent jujitsu skills, Hermansson is going to need to open him up with strikes, as opposed to going straight to the ground. "The Joker" was set to use his size and ground prowess against his previous foes, but he can’t do that here, at least not right away.
Hermansson is sure to take a few risks to see how Vettori reacts to his takedown attempts, but he’s going to need to exploit his lack of power. It is inevitable that someone is going to get taken down, and while Hermansson’s wrestling is top-notch, he’s at risk unless he scores a knockdown and pounces on that opportunity.
Vettori’s lack of power will do him in
The key here is that Vettori is a volume striker with little power and no finishing skills. It’s designed to open up his opponents for takedowns and look flashy for the judges. Hermansson is a better striker and isn’t going to wantonly shoot in unless he gets in an advantageous position.
Coupled with his experience and recent run against top-rung middleweights, Hermansson went from being a bargain buy to a full-on steal. It might be an ugly fight that borders on being boring, but Hermansson will end up victorious on the cards.
MMA pick: Hermansson (+115)
