UFC 247: Jon Jones vs. Dominick Reyes preview and pick

The UFC's pound-for-pound champion, Jon Jones, will face off against an undefeated challenger ready for his title, Dominick Reyes, in the main event of UFC 247 on Feb. 8. These two have made it clear that blood will be spilled, and BetAmerica has the call for this grudge match.

Though Reyes is coming in as a significant underdog against Jones, it was Jones who survived a tough fight with an injured Thiago Santos last time out and won by the narrowest of margins. Jones will face a less complex opponent in Reyes, who is stylistically perfect for him and limited to fighting to Jones’ strengths.

Jones can safely operate from a distance, with an eight-inch reach advantage, and is strong enough to take Reyes down if he feels the need to transition the fight to the ground. Jones' chin is rock solid and his endurance has yet to fail him, and Reyes is going to test his resolve early on to see how Jones handles his power. This plays right into the champion’s heavy hands, as he can choose to pick Reyes apart on the outside or outmuscle him in the clinch.

Reyes has tried to get under Jones' skin

Reyes has to hope Jones is blinded by rage, as the two continue to trade verbal shots ahead of the fight, because Reyes' youth and confidence will count for nothing if he can’t bypass Jones’ reach. For Reyes to spring the upset, he’ll have to throw caution to the wind and hope he can catch Jones with a punch he isn’t prepared for.

Because of the difference in reach, Reyes is going to feel Jones out and aim for takedowns to neutralize that advantage. There is a lot to like about Reyes, but he hasn’t shown the guile or caginess to suggest he’ll get inside Jones without taking heavy damage for his troubles. Ultimately it won’t matter if Reyes tries a cerebral approach or goes out guns blazing. Jones has an easy target that will eventually come right to him.

This fight will be over early

The bad blood between them might be the only thing that gets Reyes out of the first round. Jones will wipe him out, but first will carry him for a round or two to dish out as much punishment as Reyes can handle.
