Who will win the Cy Young Award in the AL and NL?

The MLB season has reached its unofficial halfway mark, which is always a good time to review the futures markets and find value bets. Here are the wisest wagers for Cy Young winners in both the American League and National League.

AL Cy Young: Charlie Morton (+300)

Houston's Justin Verlander (+150) was the clear frontrunner to earn his second Cy Young Award just a month ago but has been shaky in his last seven starts, with a 4.18 ERA. Teammate Gerrit Cole (+150) has put himself in position to potentially leech votes from Verlander thanks to his sparkling numbers in the same span for the Astros (1.60 ERA). This could create confusion for award voters, opening the door for Charlie Morton (10-2, 2.32 ERA) to win his first career Cy Young award.

Morton is fifth in strikeouts (142) and WHIP (1.030) at the All-Star break. Diving into the more advanced stats, Morton owns the best opponent OPS (.585) and FIP (2.84) in the AL this year. His 1.99 ERA since June 5 (seven starts) inspires confidence that he'll have a strong second half.

NL Cy Young: Zack Greinke (+1500)

Either Max Scherzer (-200) or Hyun-Jin Ryu (+125) will probably win the 2019 NL Cy Young, but Zack Greinke is a dark horse candidate offering very generous odds.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez has had to ask Scherzer (9-5, 2.30 ERA) to pitch deep into most of his starts to avoid going to Washington's woeful bullpen, which partially explains why Scherzer leads the NL in innings pitched. This overuse could lead to Scherzer regressing in September from fatigue. Ryu has incredible numbers in 2019 as he leads all NL starters in ERA (1.73) and WHIP (.908), but his injury history is a cause for concern.

Greinke (10-3, 2.73 ERA) has quietly had a solid campaign. He ranks in the top five in wins, ERA, WHIP (.918) and strikeout/walk ratio (7.2). If he can help secure a postseason appearance for the Diamondbacks (1.5 games back in the Wild Card standings), while Scherzer and Ryu falter, Greinke could prove to be a great value bet.
