Wednesday MLB preview: Twins at Brewers, A's at Giants

If there's one thing we learned from Tuesday night's hard-fought game between the Twins and Brewers, it's that Minnesota doesn't give up. Rocco Baldelli's club pulled off an impressive, come-from-behind win thanks to a three-run home run from third baseman Marwin Gonzalez in the eighth inning.

Expect another gritty performance today, as Kyle Gibson (11-5, 4.24) will take the mound. The seven-year veteran has yet to crack an all-star squad, but he's an underrated tactician with a solid sinker and devastating slider that generates more than its fair share of whiffs.

Gibson will face Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.20). The 33-year-old spent close to six weeks on the IL with dead arm and has been limited to five innings or fewer in each of his last two outings. He'll likely be pulled long before this game is decided.

It should be another closely contested affair, but we're giving the edge to the Twins, who have more momentum and a far fresher bullpen working in their favor.

Can you hear that? It's the sound of hitters licking their chops as they prepare to face Homer Bailey (9-8, 5.54 ERA) and Tyler Beede (3-6, 5.61 ERA) this afternoon at Oracle Park. The struggling hurlers have been on a summer-long tour to generously boost the batting averages of rival players across America.

Bailey, who went 1-14 a season ago, is fresh off a disastrous outing against the Chicago Cubs, in which he surrendered seven earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-4 Texan has given up seven or more runs three times in 2019, including twice since he was acquired from the Kansas City Royals for Kevin Merrell on July 14.

Beede hasn't been much better. The 26-year-old righty has given up five earned runs in back-to-back starts and has yet to notch a win at home this season in six outings.

Given the collective ineptitude of Bailey and Beede, today's modest run total seems like a gift from the betting gods. Jump on it while you can.
