Wednesday MLB preview: Phillies at Braves, Orioles at Rays
Philadelphia Phillies (45-40) at Atlanta Braves (50-36), 7:05 p.m. ET
Nick Pivetta (4-2, 5.63 ERA) (PHI) +120 / +1.5 runs (-155) / Over 11 runs (-105) Bryse Wilson (0-0, 8.31 ERA) (ATL) -130 / -1.5 runs (+130) / Under 11 runs (-115)MLB free play: Over
The ball should be jumping out of the hitters haven that is SunTrust Park on Wednesday night. The Over is 20-9-1 in Atlanta's last 30 home games, per Covers.com. Nick Pivetta has struggled with the Braves in two starts this year, with a 6.35 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. Expect Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson (.945 OPS in his last seven games) to provide a spark on offense.
Bryse Wilson has been a fixture in Triple-A for most of 2019, justified by his lackluster performances in the majors this year. He let up four runs on six hits in just 4 1/3 innings against the Cubs in his most recent outing June 27. Bryce Harper and company should tee off on the 21-year-old rookie.
Baltimore Orioles (24-61) at Tampa Bay Rays (50-36), 7:10 p.m. ET
John Means (7-4, 2.50 ERA) (BAL) +175 / +1.5 runs (-115) / Over 8.5 runs (-105) Ryne Stanek (0-1, 2.64 ERA) (TB) -195 / -1.5 runs (-105) / Under 8.5 runs (-115)MLB free play: Orioles moneyline first five innings (+165)
John Means, the Orioles' lone All-Star in 2019, should at least put his team in position to grab a rare victory.Means had a 2-0 record in June (four starts) and a 1.71 ERA. In his only encounter against the Rays this season (April 18), he worked two shutout innings and struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Means typically runs up his pitch counts, but fortunately for him, the Rays are among the least patient teams in baseball. Tampa's lineup was 22nd in walks drawn in June and tallied the third-most strikeouts.
Ryne Stanek is the listed starter for Tampa, but is merely expected to open for Yonny Chirinos. Chirinos has a 4.00 ERA and 1.277 WHIP in his last three starts. The Orioles defeated Chirinos in their most recent meeting May 4, when he allowed three runs on seven hits. The big problem with backing the O's in the full-time market is their woeful bullpen (29th with a 6.08 ERA). Make money with Means in the first five innings market instead.
