Mets starter Zack Wheeler (9-7, 4.41 ERA) could be in for another rough outing, as he faces the Nationals in Wednesday afternoon's series finale, which gives Washington and Anibal Sanchez (8-6, 3.80 ERA) the inside track to a win.Wheeler's opponent batting average since the All-Star break is an elevated .279. He's faced the Nationals four times this year and has gone 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA. Outfielder Adam Eaton's stats against Wheeler (10-for-22, 1.101 OPS) stand out.
Sanchez held opponents to a respectable .215 average in August (five starts). He owns solid numbers against some of the New York's best hitters, including third baseman Todd Frazier (1-for-21), outfielder Michael Conforto (1-for-11) and shortstop Amed Rosario (1-for-7). The Nats' bullpen has had little go right this year, but its ERA over the last 14 days is a respectable 2.97 (sixth). The Mets' bullpen ERA in that same span is 5.28 (25th) on the heels of a disastrous, six-run ninth inning Tuesday night.
San Francisco Giants (66-72) at St. Louis Cardinals (78-60), 7:45 p.m. ET

MLB free play: Cardinals moneyline
Cardinals starter Michael Wacha (6-6, 5.07 ERA) is no world-beater, but he and his team might just outduel Madison Bumgarner (9-8, 3.62 ERA) and the Giants at Busch Stadium on Wednesday night.San Francisco has dropped seven of its last eight games, including the first two of this series with St. Louis. The Giants' lineup has accounted for just 2.88 runs per game during that span. Wacha's WHIP at home (1.468) is stronger than it is on the road (1.621), and his opponent batting average in August (.255) was his lowest of any month this season (excluding March).
Bumgarner's road splits are surprisingly poor. He is 3-6 with a 4.68 ERA and .272 opponent batting average in 13 starts. That contrasts sharply with his sub-3.00 ERA and .213 batting average against at home. Kolten Wong has been hot over the last week (12-for-24). Look for him to be a difference-maker.
