Wednesday MLB preview: Indians at Blue Jays, Yankees at Twins
Cleveland Indians (58-42) at Toronto Blue Jays (39-64), 7:07 p.m. ET
Shane Bieber (9-3, 3.69 ERA) (CLE) -130 / -1.5 runs (+115) / Over 8.5 runs (-120) Marcus Stroman (6-10, 3.06 ERA) (TOR) +120 / +1.5 runs (-135) / Under 8.5 runs (EVEN)MLB free play: Indians moneyline (Bieber vs. Stroman only)
Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman could be making his final audition for trade-deadline suitors Wednesday night against the Indians. Bettors shouldn't let themselves get sucked into that drama, as there's a bargain to be had with Shane Bieber and the Tribe in this spot.Bieber owns a 0.988 WHIP in eight starts since June 4. Four of those efforts were on the road, where he has a 3.19 ERA this season. Opponents are batting .189 against Bieber away from home, compared to .246 at Progressive Field. Toronto's lineup is tied for the worst batting average in the league at .233.
Meanwhile, Cleveland's bats are red-hot this month, with a league-leading .290 batting average. Stroman has struggled with several of these Indians hitters in the past, including outfielder Tyler Naquin (7-for-12) and shortstop Francisco Lindor (5-for-15). Look for the Tribe to create some early separation at the Rogers Centre before handing things off to their MLB-best bullpen by ERA (3.30).
New York Yankees (65-35) at Minnesota Twins (61-39), 8:10 p.m. ET, ESPN
J.A. Happ (8-5, 4.86 ERA) (NYY) -115 / +1.5 runs (-220) / Over 10.5 runs (-120) Jake Odorizzi (11-4, 3.18 ERA) (MIN) +105 / -1.5 runs (+180) / Under 10.5 runs (EVEN)MLB free play: Twins moneyline
Tuesday night's tilt between the Yankees and Twins saw the visitors prevail in a wild 14-12 affair. Things should be much more contained, as J.A. Happ will take the hill for New York, while Minnesota will counter with Jake Odorizzi. The edge is with the latter in the rubber match.Odorizzi is 6-0 in nine starts at Target Field this year, with a 2.56 ERA and opponent batting average of .203. He's been effective against the Yankees in the past, with a 0.993 WHIP in his last eight outings against New York. That includes his six shutout innings in victory over the Bombers in the Bronx on May 4. Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius, who had five hits Tuesday night, has faced Odorizzi 22 times and recorded just two hits.
Happ will have to be wary of the Twins' powerful lineup, which has produced the most home runs of any team in 2019 (191). Minnesota also owns the best batting average against lefties (.290) in the majors. Catcher Mitch Garver, who has clubbed six homers in his last nine games, is 5-for-12 in prior meetings with Happ with one home run.
