The Mets' bullpen woes make them tough to trust in the full-time market, but they're a good bet to get out to an early lead against the Giants at Citi Field on Wednesday night.

Jason Vargas has pitched to a 2.40 ERA in his last six starts for New York (30 innings). San Francisco is batting .222 against lefties this year, 28th in the majors. His biggest problem will be having to hand it off to a relief corps that's pitched to a 12.56 ERA in the last week.

Tyler Beede has never faced the Mets but has struggled mightily in his brief big-league career (7.97 ERA in 20 1/3 innings). New York has plated 5.27 runs per game at home since May 10. First baseman Pete Alonso, batting .341 over his last 10 games with four homers and eight RBIs, should drive the offense for the Mets.

Two starters with solid situational splits should keep a lid on things for most of this contest Wednesday night.

Charlie Morton will go for Tampa Bay, and he is 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA in seven starts on the road this year. The hometown opponents are batting .175 against him. Detroit's offense is 29th in the majors in runs per game at 3.63.

Spencer Turnbull counters for the Tigers, and his home/road splits are fairly even. However, he's 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA in night games this season. The Rays are a modest 18th in runs per game at 4.71.
