Tuesday MLB preview: Giants at Phillies, Cubs at Cardinals
San Francisco Giants (54-52) at Philadelphia Phillies (55-50), 7:05 p.m. ET
Tyler Beede (3-4, 4.85 ERA) (SF) +115 / +1.5 runs (-180) / Over 10.5 runs (-105) Drew Smyly (1-5, 7.69 ERA) (PHI) -125 / -1.5 runs (+150) / Under 10.5 runs (-115)MLB free play: Under
Two struggling starters will meet at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night, which makes the Over look good at first glance. With closer examination, however, it seems that Under bettors will prevail here.Tyler Beede owns a 2.63 ERA in his last four starts, where he's allowed just two walks in 27 1/3 innings. Preventing the free pass has been integral to his recent success, as Beede allowed 28 walks in his first nine starts of the season (5.97 ERA). Beede has never faced the Phillies, which gives him a leg-up on a Philadelphia lineup that's not entirely sure what to expect.
Drew Smyly produced an awful 8.42 ERA in a Rangers uniform this year, but went six innings in his first start for the Phillies on July 21 and surrendered only one run to the Pirates at PNC Park. San Francisco's lineup is batting just .231 against lefties this year, the worst mark in the majors. Giants center fielder Kevin Pillar is 0-for-12 lifetime against Smyly.
Chicago Cubs (56-49) at St. Louis Cardinals (56-49), 8:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network
Yu Darvish (3-4, 4.54 ERA) (CHC) -120 / -1.5 runs (+130) / Over 8.5 runs (-120) Adam Wainwright (7-7, 4.63 ERA) (STL) +110 / +1.5 runs (-155) / Under 8.5 runs (EVEN)MLB free play: Under
Cubs starter Yu Darvish will seek to build on a solid July, while Cardinals Adam Wainwright hopes to improve on his incredible 2019 home splits. An Under appears to be in the works, as Chicago and St. Louis open a three-game series at Busch Stadium on Tuesday night.Darvish owns a 2.92 ERA and 0.770 WHIP in four starts this month. Most of the Cardinals' lineup has fared poorly against the Japanese import. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt's 1-for-12 lifetime record against Darvish with eight strikeouts is the most glaring.
Wainwright is 5-2 with a 2.33 ERA in nine starts at home this season, which contrasts sharply with his 2-5 record and 7.16 ERA in 10 starts on the road. Several of the Cubs' big bats have floundered when facing him, including second baseman Javier Baez (3-for-24).
According to Covers.com, the Under has cashed in eight straight games when Chicago exits an off-day. The Under is also 20-6 in the Cardinals' last 26 home contests.
