Thursday MLB preview: Yankees at Red Sox, Twins at White Sox
New York Yankees (66-35) at Boston Red Sox (56-47), 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network
Masahiro Tanaka (7-5, 4.00 ERA) (NYY) -120 / -1.5 runs (+115) / Over 11 runs (-115) Rick Porcello (8-7, 5.61 ERA) (BOS) +110 / +1.5 runs (-135) / Under 11 runs (-105)MLB free play: Over
Baseball's most intense rivalry will be renewed Thursday night, in what should be a high-scoring tilt at Fenway Park.Rick Porcello has struggled against New York this year, including a disastrous start in London. He was shelled for five runs on nine hits in just 4 2/3 innings by the Bombers on June 1, and the Yankees didn't even have the surging Edwin Encarnacion (.934 OPS last seven games) in the lineup that day. The well-traveled slugger has slashed .298/.313/.617 all-time against Porcello (47 at-bats).
Since he lowered his ERA to 2.94 May 24, Masahiro Tanaka has been anything but reliable. His ERA since May 28, excluding his start in London, is 4.33. Some of Boston's best hitters have done well historically against Tanaka, especially designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who has eight hits in 18 at-bats (.433) and three home runs.
Minnesota Twins (61-40) at Chicago White Sox (45-54), 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network
Jose Berrios (8-5, 2.96 ERA) (MIN) -145 / -1.5 runs (+110) / Over 8.5 runs (-120) Lucas Giolito (11-4, 3.12 ERA) (CHW) +130 / +1.5 runs (-130) / Under 8.5 runs (EVEN)MLB free play: Twins moneyline
Twins starter Jose Berrios should put forth another dominant performance against the division-rival White Sox to help his team secure a road victory Thursday night.Berrios is 8-2 in 11 efforts against Chicago with a 2.21 ERA. White Sox second baseman Yolmer Sanchez and third baseman Yoan Moncada are just 9-for-45 (.200) combined against the righty from Puerto Rico.
Lucas Giolito shut out the Twins through five innings June 30 before he was removed because of a prolonged rain delay. That was a day game, however, and Giolito's daytime ERA this season is 1.77. His ERA at night jumps up to 4.03.
It doesn't seem likely that Giolito can contain Minnesota's mighty lineup again anyway. They've been tops in baseball most of the year by average and OPS and are seventh and second in those respective categories this month. Look for right fielder Max Kepler (5-for-10 against Giolito) to jump-start the offense.
