Monday MLB betting preview: Nationals at Cardinals, Reds at Cubs
Washington Nationals (82-66) at St. Louis Cardinals (83-66), 7:45 p.m. ET, MLBN
Team | Run Line | Moneyline | Total |
---|
Washington Nationals | -1.5 (+105) | -150 | Over 8.5 (-105) |
St. Louis Cardinals | +1.5 (-125) | +135 | Under 8.5 (-115) |
A streaking Stephen Strasburg (17-6, 3.49 ERA) should propel the Nationals to victory over the Cardinals on Monday night.
Strasburg is 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA over his last five starts. In his last three efforts against St. Louis, Strasburg is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt and third baseman Matt Carpenter have combined for just 10 hits in 39 prior at-bats against the San Diego State product, with no home runs.
Dakota Hudson (15-7, 3.38 ERA) is stingy in just about every department except walks, as he's issued the third-most in the NL this season. Washington is fourth in walks drawn since the All-Star break, so look for them to generate traffic on the bases that way and scratch out just enough offense to prevail.

Two struggling starters, the Reds' Kevin Gausman (3-8, 5.83 ERA) and the Cubs' Cole Hamels (7-7, 3.89 ERA), should help Over bettors cash early on Monday night.
Gausman's performances on the road this year have left plenty to be desired, as he is 1-4 with a 6.28 ERA and .311 opponent batting average. In his last five innings against Chicago, the LSU product has surrendered 10 earned runs. Cubs right fielder Nicholas Castellanos, who owns a .367 batting average over his last seven games, has a 1.046 OPS in 15 prior at-bats against Gausman.
Hamels is 1-4 with a 6.49 ERA and .336 opponent batting average in eight starts since he came off the IL in August. He'll have to tread carefully against Cincinnati third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who just moved into a tie for the National League lead in home runs (47) with the Mets' Pete Alonso, thanks to a two-homer performance against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
