MLB Wednesday Plays: Mets at Marlins, Cardinals at Pirates

The New York Mets will be going for a three-game sweep of Miami at Marlins Park on Wednesday night, as 2018 NL Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom takes the hill. DeGrom’s opposite number, Trevor Richards, is not a household name but should also put some zeroes on the scoreboard in this one.

Richards began slowly in 2018 but produced a respectable 4.10 ERA in 12 starts after the All-Star break. Hitters were batting just .229 against him in that span, compared to .276 before the break. Richards is a right-hander but has more favorable numbers against left-handed batters (.230 batting average against compared to .272 for righties in 2018), which comprise the majority of the Mets’ lineup. He began this year well, limiting the Rockies to one run over six innings on March 29.

DeGrom hardly needs an introduction; he’ll be looking to build on his MLB record of 30 straight starts allowing three runs or fewer. Jeurys Familia and Edwin Diaz, idle on Tuesday night, will be available for late-game relief.

St. Louis Cardinals (2-3) at Pittsburgh Pirates (1-2)

After losing an 11-inning home opener on Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates will try to get even with the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park on Wednesday night. They have a good chance to do so, as Jameson Taillon will toe the rubber.

Taillon was dominant at times in 2018, particularly after the All-Star break, where he pitched to a 2.33 ERA in 13 starts. He had the Cardinals’ number last season, as he surrendered just five earned runs in three starts (21.1 IP) with a .161 batting average against.

By contrast, St. Louis starter Miles Mikolas had some rough outings against Pittsburgh in 2018, pitching to a 2.90 ERA but allowing a .259 batting average against. Francisco Cervelli, Corey Dickerson and Adam Frazier all have an average of .333 or better in 10 or more career at-bats against Mikolas.
