MLB Tuesday Preview: Mets at Phillies, Orioles at Rays

The New York Mets' potent bats should pounce on Nick Pivetta and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night.

The Mets are fourth in baseball in runs per game at 6.12. Their most productive hitter, utility man Jeff McNeil (.404 average), is 0-for-2 against Pivetta, but rookie first baseman Pete Alonso (.339 average, six home runs, 17 RBIs) and catcher Wilson Ramos (.320 average) have yet to face the native of Canada.

Steven Matz has been New York's best starter so far, as Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom has been fallible in his last two starts. Matz's WHIP is 1.041 through 16 1/3 innings. The two Phillies who have faced Matz the most, right fielder Bryce Harper and first baseman Rhys Hoskins, have just five hits between them in 27 at-bats. Southpaw Justin Wilson and closer Edwin Diaz should be available out of manager Mickey Callaway's bullpen to shut the door late.

Baltimore Orioles (7-10) at Tampa Bay Rays (12-4)

The Tampa Bay Rays should continue their early season dominance in the AL East when they host the Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night.

Dylan Bundy has struggled mightily for the Orioles so far, allowing six home runs in his last two starts while pitching to a 1.784 WHIP. He hasn't even gone deep into any games yet, throwing just 12 1/3 innings in three outings. That's put undue stress on a beleaguered bullpen that's next-to-last in baseball by ERA at 7.12. Bundy will face a lineup that still has three everyday players with an OPS above 1.000 in outfielders Austin Meadows and Kevin Kiermaier and second baseman Brandon Lowe.

Tyler Glasnow counters for Tampa Bay, and he's allowed just one earned run in his first three starts of 2019. His strikeout/walk ratio is a robust 7.0. Baltimore second baseman Johnathan Villar (.300 average), his team's most effective hitter behind left fielder Trey Mancini (.343 average), has just one hit in six chances (three strikeouts) against Glasnow. This game should essentially be decided well before the Rays' bullpen (eighth by ERA at 3.64) gets involved.
