MLB picks: White Sox vs. Brewers, Dodgers vs. Padres
We'll take a look at two appealing totals as we highlight the best bets in baseball for Tuesday night.
Chicago White Sox (6-4) at Milwaukee Brewers (3-4), 8:10 p.m. ET
Staff aces square off as the White Sox send Lucas Giolito to the Miller Park mound to face Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers on Tuesday night. Under bettors should be all over this matchup.
Giolito bounced back from a dreadful Opening Day start against the Twins (seven runs on six hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings) by tossing six scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the Indians last Wednesday.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Giolito’s better effort occurred on the road, where he was 9-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 2019 (14 starts). He went 5-6 with a 4.06 ERA at 15 starts at home last year. Chicago’s bullpen has been serviceable in 2020, producing a 4.01 ERA (14th) while tossing the fifth-most innings in the majors. The back-end guys will probably not be needed in this one, as Giolito should get through Milwaukee’s 25th-ranked lineup by OPS (.654) with relative ease.
Woodruff has surrendered just two earned runs in his first two starts of 2020, both on the road (11 1/3 innings). But he did his best work at home last season, going 9-0 with a 3.06 ERA (13 starts), compared to his 2-3 record and 4.41 ERA everywhere else (nine starts). Woodruff is backed by a bullpen that’s registered the second-most strikeouts per nine innings this season (11.57). The White Sox lineup has tallied the 10th-most strikeouts in the majors (92).

Los Angeles Dodgers (7-4) at San Diego Padres (7-4), 9:10 p.m. ET
Pitching prospects square off at Petco Park as the Dodgers’ Dustin May takes on the Padres’ Dinelson Lamet. Unfortunately for them, neither one has much early success against their respective opponents. That should lead to some offensive fireworks in this one.
May has made four appearances (two starts) against San Diego going 0-2 with a 3.46 ERA over 13 innings. The Padres have proven to be dangerous at the dish this year, ranking fifth in OPS (.785). They also lead the majors in stolen bases with 17. L.A.’s bullpen, which has tossed the seventh-most innings in baseball this year, will likely have to do some more heavy lifting on Tuesday night.
Lamet fared even worse in two starts against the Dodgers last year, going 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA (10 innings). L.A.’s offense hasn’t skipped a beat in 2020, as they’re currently seventh in OPS (.778). He’s backed by a bullpen that’s 25th in ERA (5.93) this season. Even preeminent closer Kirby Yates has struggled in relief this year, producing a 13.50 ERA and 3.000 WHIP through four appearances (3 1/3 innings).
