MLB picks: Dodgers vs. A's, Diamondbacks vs. Rockies

Fans of daytime baseball are in for a treat this Wednesday, as 13 of the 15 MLB games on the docket are scheduled for the afternoon window. We took a look at all the available matchups and came up with our wisest wagers of the day.

First, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics wrap up a three-game series at Oakland Coliseum. Then we dive into a nighttime matchup between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Los Angeles Dodgers (5-1) at Oakland Athletics (0-6), 3:37 p.m. ET

Though his 5.68 ERA doesn’t reflect it, Trevor Bauer pitched brilliantly in his Dodgers debut last Friday. He should twirl another gem against the A’s on Wednesday afternoon.

Bauer took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Coors Field – a hitter’s haven – before the wheels came off in his first game with Los Angeles. He wound up allowing four earned runs in the seventh while recording just one out. But it shouldn’t diminish what Bauer accomplished before that frame, including his 10 punchouts on the day.

Results against Bauer have been poor on the whole for most of Oakland’s better hitters; Ramon Laureano, Jed Lowrie and Stephen Piscotty are a combined 2-for-25 (.080) all-time against him.

Jesus Luzardo counters for the A’s, and he had a forgettable initial outing of 2021, surrendering five runs on eight hits in five innings of work against the Houston Astros.

Pick your favorite Dodger and he’s probably hot right now; Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Justin Turner, and Corey Seager are all batting .348 or better in this early stage of the campaign.

Arizona Diamondbacks (2-3) at Colorado Rockies (1-4), 8:40 p.m. ET

A gaudy score should be in store at Coors Field on Wednesday night as the Diamondbacks visit the Rockies.

Madison Bumgarner gets the nod for Arizona, and optimism that he could shake off a disastrous 2020 was quickly damaged when he coughed up six earned runs in only four innings of work against the San Diego Padres on Opening Day. He’s never negotiated the Blake Street ballpark all that well, producing a 6.55 ERA over his last four starts there.

Bumgarner will have to tread carefully against second baseman Ryan McMahon, who hit three homers against the D-backs in a 10-8 victory on Tuesday night.

Antonio Senzatela responds for Colorado, and he was knocked around by the Dodgers in his first start of the season to the tune of seven earned runs in only 3 1/3 innings. Senzatela’s home splits in 2020 were encouraging – a 2.10 ERA over five starts – but a larger sample size from 2019 (6.21 ERA in 12 starts) dampens hopes for a solid outing.
