MLB notebook: Will Washigton move Max Scherzer?

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is Friday at 4 p.m. ET.

Some clubs are buyers, some are sellers, and many are in a dangerous purgatory that has fans on the edge of their seats.

We’ve already seen several newsworthy transactions, and we’ll take a look in this week’s MLB notebook!

Gallo on the Go

The biggest deal so far involves outfielder Joey Gallo.

The Yankees parted ways with six prospects to bring him in from Texas and provide much-needed power from the left-handed batter’s box.

He has mashed 25 home runs in 95 games this season, and while he won’t win any batting titles (he has a .223 average this year), when he connects, the ball usually goes a long, long way.

Marte heads to the Bay

The Oakland Athletics don't aggressively go after stars at the deadline. However, outfielder Starling Marte is on the way to Northern California from the Miami Marlins, in exchange for starting pitcher Jesus Lozardo.

Marte has hit .306, with an OPS of .860, this season. His contract is up at the end of the year, so there was some incentive for the Marlins to move him.

Where will Scherzer land?

Rumors are flying that Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer may be on the market.

He is an unrestricted free agent after this season, and the Nats sit eight games behind the New York Mets in the National League East standings.

Plenty of teams are interested, but ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported Scherzer has exercised his 10-and-5 rights to veto deals that would send him to Houston and Philadelphia.

What will the Cubs do?

The Chicago Cubs are at a crossroads. They’re three games under .500, and several players who helped lead them to World Series glory in 2016 may be on other teams in just a few days.

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Baez are being bandied about in trade discussions, and they would provide an instant jolt to any team in the hunt for the postseason.

All three would be rentals, though, as their contracts expire at the end of this year.
