MLB Monday Picks: Mets vs. Nationals, Astros vs. Brewers
Get ready for a NL East grudge match this afternoon as the New York Mets tangle with the Washington Nationals in D.C. Meanwhile, over in Milwaukee, Gerrit Cole will try to one-up teammate Justin Verlander one day after his latest no-no when he takes the mound against the Brewers.
New York Mets (69-67) at Washington Nationals (77-58), 1:05 p.m. ET
Team | Run Line | Moneyline | Total |
---|
New York Mets | -1.5 (+135) | -110 | O 9.5 (-115) |
Washington Nationals | +1.5 (-160) | +100 | U 9.5 (-105) |
An Over seems to be in store in the series opener between the Mets and Nationals.
New York starter Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 4.14 ERA) is fresh off a disastrous outing against the Cubs, as he allowed nine earned runs in just three innings on the mound.

Washington’s sluggers are firing on all cylinders, plating seven or more runs in nine of their last 10 games. Infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, who owns a .936 OPS in his second stint with the Nationals, is 5-for-10 all-time against Syndergaard.
Joe Ross (3-3, 5.36 ERA) is allowing lefties an .836 OPS in 88 at-bats this year. He’s liable to be burned by Mets outfielders Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo, who have combined for 10 hits in just 17 prior meetings with the native Californian. Ross can’t take first baseman Pete Alonso lightly either, as he’s up to 43 home runs in his rookie season.

Astros starter Gerrit Cole (15-5, 2.85 ERA) has a difficult act to follow as teammate Justin Verlander tossed a no-hitter on Sunday, but he should do just fine against the Brewers on Labor Day. Couple him with another solid starter in Milwaukee’s Adrian Houser (6-5, 3.52 ERA), and it looks like an Under is in order.

Cole has plenty of experience against the Brewers from his days as a Pirate, most of it positive. Milwaukee left fielder Ryan Braun, center fielder Lorenzo Cain, third baseman Mike Moustakas and catcher Yasmani Grandal are a combined 2-for-32 (.063) all-time against the All-Star right-hander.
Houser holds a creditable .208 opponent batting average in 35 innings of work at Miller Park this season. He made five starts in August and went 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA and .229 opponent batting average.
