Major League Baseball Betting - Gausman, Braves Host Reeling Brewers
The biggest series of the weekend in Major League Baseball betting is in Atlanta where the Braves (62-50 SU) and Brewers (66-52 SU) open a 3-game series. Both teams are in a tight chase in the National League with the Braves trailing the Phillies by 1-game in the NL East while the Brewers sit just 2-games behind the Cubs in the NL Central.
Milwaukee begins an 8-game road trip with big games against the Cubs and Cardinals to follow next week. The Braves play their next 11 games at home and have eight games against the NL East-worst Marlines yet this month. Friday’s pitching match-up is the most intriguing of the series, and each starter is expected to make an impact down the stretch on their teams playoff hopes. The linemaker sees the opener as a toss-up.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS AT ATLANTA BRAVES – Friday, August 10th Peralta (MIL) -105 / -1.5 (+150) / O 8.5 Gausman (ATL) -105 / +1.5 (-170) / U 8.5
Freddy Peralta, 22, was in Double-A ball a year ago where he dominated Southern League hitters. His rapid accent to the Majors came May 13 this year and he shined in his debut striking out 13 Rockies and earning the victory at Colorado. Peralta tossed 5.2 innings of shutout ball and allowed just 1 hit in the Brewers 7-3 win as a +150 underdog. Peralta made one more start before being sent back to the minors, and was called up again in June and has been a regular in the rotation since. He’s now made 10 Major League Baseball betting starts and has posted a 3.54 ERA with 71 K’s in 53.1 innings and just 27 hits allowed. Impressive stuff, and while he’s struggled with control (28 BB) at times, the native of the Dominican Republic has great upside. His low 90’s fastball has been his best pitch as he can cut it, run it or sink it and changes speeds well. Peralta faced the Braves July 6 in Milwaukee and allowed just 3 hits and 1 run over 6.0 innings with 6 strikeouts. Peralta’s last two road starts lasted just 4.0 and 3.2 innings with more than 90 pitches in each game. While there is much to like, there is also some control issues and inconsistency can be expected from a young rookie pitcher and the Braves now see Peralta a second time in five weeks.
Kevin Gausman makes his second start for Atlanta since arriving by trade through Baltimore. He makes his first start at Sun Trust Park and also faces the Brewers for the first time in his career. That’s a plus, and Gausman is a pitcher with some strong stuff but hasn’t yet delivered consistent execution. His high 90’s fastball is lively with added movement. But his splitter and breaking pitch have not been reliable enough.
Gausman didn’t live up to expectations in Baltimore as a high first-round pick in 2012. He admitted he was extremely nervous in his Braves debut and should settle and pitch better after allowing 3 runs and 6 hits over 5 innings to take the 3-0 loss. Gausman made 21 starts with Baltimore and had just six pure quality starts for Major League Baseball betting purposes. His 4.43 ERA and xERA near 5.0 wasn’t impressive either, but Gausman is capable of better things. His teammates are as well after failing to score for him in his debut and that should also motivate them returning home.
