Friday MLB preview: Yankees at Red Sox, Rangers at A's
New York Yankees (66-36) at Boston Red Sox (57-47), 7:10 p.m. ET, MLBN
James Paxton (5-5, 4.20 ERA) (NYY) -120 / -1.5 runs (+115) / Over 11 runs (-120) Andrew Cashner (9-5, 4.19 ERA) (BOS) +110 / +1.5 runs (-135) / Under 11 runs (EVEN)MLB free play: Yankees moneyline
The Yankees were embarrassed by the Red Sox in a 19-3 loss Thursday at Fenway Park, but they should extract some revenge against Andrew Cashner.James Paxton dominated the Red Sox when he last saw them April 16, when he allowed just two hits and struck out 12 over eight shutout innings. Despite a rough last outing against the Rockies in the Bronx (four earned runs over 3 1/3 innings), "Big Maple" still owns a respectable 3.80 ERA in July through four starts. The heart of the New York bullpen, which has guided the unit to a 2.55 ERA over the last two weeks (second best in baseball) should shut the door late after taking the night off during a 16-run shellacking.
Cashner has not fared well since he left the Orioles, with a 7.36 ERA for the Red Sox in two starts. Several Yankees batters have had their way with Cashner in the past, including second baseman Gleyber Torres (6-for-13, two home runs) and first baseman Luke Voit (5-for-7 with a home run).
Texas Rangers (52-51) at Oakland Athletics (58-46), 10:07 p.m. ET
Lance Lynn (12-6, 3.93 ERA) (TEX) EVEN / +1.5 runs (-200) / Over 9 runs (-105) Daniel Mengden (5-1, 4.65 ERA) (OAK) -110 / -1.5 runs (+165) / Under 9 runs (-115)MLB free play: A's moneyline
Lance Lynn has not been his usual self for the Rangers over his last two starts, with a 6.23 ERA, and the Athletics will offer him no relief Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum.Lynn is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in two starts (9 1/3 innings) against Oakland this season. Designated hitter Khris Davis is just 4-for-23 with no home runs against the Ole Miss product, but first baseman Matt Olson, third baseman Matt Chapman, shortstop Marcus Semien and left fielder Robbie Grossman have totaled eight hits (two homers) off Lynn in just 18 at-bats (.444). Texas' relievers have struggled over the last two weeks, with a 5.72 ERA, the fourth worst number in the majors during that span.
Daniel Mengden will counter for the A's, and he has flummoxed these Rangers hitters in the past. Outfielders Nomar Mazara, Shin-Soo Choo and Delino DeShields are 5-for-31 (.161) against him all-time.
