Friday MLB preview: Yankees at Rays, Marlins at Braves
New York Yankees (56-29) at Tampa Bay Rays (50-38), 7:10 p.m. ET
Masahiro Tanaka (5-5, 3.74 ERA) (NYY) -110 / +1.5 runs (+135) / Over 8.5 runs (-110) Brendan McKay (1-0, 0.00 ERA) (TB) EVEN / -1.5 runs (-160) / Under 8.5 runs (-110)MLB free play: Under 4.5 first five innings (EVEN)
Bettors should expect strong efforts on the mound from both Masahiro Tanaka and Brendan McKay on Friday night.Tanaka is probably happy to put the London series with the Red Sox in his rear-view mirror, as he was chased in the first inning after surrendering six earned runs Saturday. The Japanese starter has been masterful against Tampa in 2019, with a 2-0 record and just one earned run in 22 innings. The Rays' lineup is batting just .132 against Tanaka in 2019.
McKay had an excellent first start for Tampa on Saturday, when he took a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Rangers. He ultimately let up a hit and a walk before he was removed after six innings and 81 pitches. The Yankees' offense has not fared well against lefties this year, as they're 24th in OPS (.709).
Miami Marlins (32-53) at Atlanta Braves (52-36), 7:20 p.m. ET
Jordan Yamamoto (3-0, 2.35 ERA) (MIA) +170 / +1.5 runs (-115) / Over 10 runs (-110) Julio Teheran (5-6, 3.99 ERA) (ATL) -190 / -1.5 runs (-105) / Under 10 runs (-110)MLB free play: Under 5.5 first five innings (EVEN)
Don't count on the Marlins and Braves eclipsing yet another sky-high total on Friday night.Jordan Yamamoto has made four starts for the Fish since he was promoted from Double-A on June 12. His ERA is solid so far and his batting average against is .133. The Braves' bats are hot (.868 OPS last seven days, fifth in the majors), but Yamamoto should cool them down, at least for a while.
Teheran has an 11.91 ERA in his last three starts, but two of those runs were surrendered after going back in following a lengthy rain delay against the Mets on June 29. He has shut out Miami through 12 innings this season, however, with a .100 batting average against. Second baseman Starlin Castro and shortstop Miguel Rojas are just 6-for-42 (.143) all-time off Teheran, and third baseman Brian Anderson could be held out once more with a bruised right elbow he injured Tuesday.
