Friday MLB preview: Phillies at Marlins, A's at Angels
Philadelphia Phillies (43-38) at Miami Marlins (30-49), 7:10 p.m. ET
Vince Velazquez (2-4, 4.40 ERA) (PHI) -135 / -1.5 runs (+120) / Over 8 runs (-110) Elieser Hernandez (0-2, 4.34 ERA) (MIA) +125 / +1.5 runs (-140) / Under 8 runs (-110)MLB free play: Phillies moneyline first five innings (-120)
Phillies starter Vince Velazquez took a hard-luck no-decision when he faced Elieser Hernandez and the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday, when he allowed just one hit (a home run) over five innings before his team coughed up a 3-1 lead. The Phillies may not have their bullpen problems solved just yet, but they still look like a solid bet in the first five innings market.Velazquez has outstanding numbers against most of Miami's hitters. Third baseman Brian Anderson, second baseman Starlin Castro, first baseman Neil Walker and outfielder Curtis Granderson are 6-for-54 (.111) all-time against him.
Bryce Harper had two RBIs for the Phillies against Hernandez on Saturday, including one off a solo home run. Look for another big effort from the All-Star right fielder.
Oakland Athletics (43-39) at Los Angeles Angels (42-40), 10:07 p.m. ET
Mike Fiers (7-3, 4.20 ERA) (OAK) +130 / +1.5 runs (-150) / Over 10 runs (-110) Noe Ramirez (3-0, 2.95 ERA) (LAA) -145 / -1.5 runs (+125) / Under 10 runs (-110)MLB free play: Athletics moneyline
Mike Fiers has been on a roll for the Athletics over the last two months, and he should keep on going Friday night.Fiers has lowered his ERA from 8.28 on April 20 to 4.20 on June 22 (11 starts). His WHIP during that span is a spiffy 0.914. Six of his last 11 starts have occurred on the road, where he has a 3.60 ERA. In two starts against the Angels this season (12 innings), Fiers has held the Halos to a .195 batting average.
The Angels will likely try to cobble together a "bullpen game" with Noe Ramirez listed as the starter. Angels relievers have struggled over the last two weeks, with a 4.80 ERA. The A's bullpen has produced a 2.89 ERA in the same span. Look for first baseman Matt Olson (.894 OPS in June) and outfielder Ramon Laureano (.854 OPS in June) to produce for Oakland.
