MLB Star Martinez's Little Vic Eyes Dubai Glory

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—The Dubai World Cup meeting will feature a notable crossover of sporting worlds, as former Major League Baseball (MLB) standout Victor Martinez sends his horse, Little Vic, to contest the Godolphin Mile (G2) at Meydan Racecourse. Martinez, a five-time MLB All-Star, has transitioned his competitive drive into the realm of thoroughbred racing.
Little Vic, a product of the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, represents Martinez's successful foray into racehorse ownership. The colt's journey, under the guidance of trainer Juan Carlos Avila, has generated significant excitement. "I don't know anything about horses, so the trainer, Juan Carlos Avila, picks them out, and we really got lucky with Little Vic," he said.
Martinez's involvement in racing stems from his upbringing near a racetrack in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela. His passion has translated into a serious investment, with Little Vic's earnings surpassing $566,010. The colt's recent victory in Fred W. Hooper S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park, over the same one-mile distance as the Godolphin Mile, has fueled expectations.
The former baseball star also owned King Guillermo, a horse that won the 2020 Tampa Bay Derby (G3). That horse had to be scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to a fever. This fact shows the highs and lows of racehorse ownership.
"I named him Little Vic because in my playing times my playmates used to call my son Little Vic," Martinez explained, highlighting his connection with his racehorse. Martinez and his wife, Margaret, will be in Dubai to witness Little Vic's performance.
The Godolphin Mile presents a significant test, but Martinez expresses confidence in his colt's ability. Little Vic's racing style, characterized by a strong finish, suggests he's well-suited for the Meydan track. The race also marks a milestone for trainer Avila, who will be making his Dubai debut.
Martinez's presence underscores the growing trend of professional athletes investing in horse racing, bringing a unique blend of celebrity and sporting enthusiasm to the sport.
