What we know about the Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson charity match

The wait is finally over for some major sports action, as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson will square off on the golf course May 24.

Named “The Match: Champions for Charity,” Brady and Mickelson will pair up to challenge the team of Manning and Woods in a televised golf event aimed at raising money for COVID-19 relief.

Here's everything you need to know about the highly anticipated competition and who is most likely to win.

When is the match?

Coverage will begin at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 24.

Where is the match?

The competition will be held at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. The 18-hole championship course was originally designed by two-time major winner Greg Norman and famed course designer Pete Dye in 1995. Club members include many PGA and European Tour top professionals, including Woods.

Spectators are not permitted on the course, and the players will go without caddies, as a precaution.

What is the match format?

The match will feature nine holes of four-ball (best ball), then modified alternate-shot play on the back nine. To generate additional funds for COVID-19 relief, on-course challenges will be mixed in throughout the match. Each player will wear a mic, and trash talk is anticipated, especially from Mickelson and Manning.

Back in November of 2018, Mickelson and Woods played in a similar event, "The Match: Tiger vs. Phil," in which Mickelson bested Woods after 22 holes at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Unlike the upcoming charity contest with Manning and Brady, that event included a $9 million purse, which the winner collected in its entirety. 

In this game of legends, Woods and Manning are favored at -225. Woods, a 15-time major champion and winner of a record 82 PGA Tour events (tied with Sam Snead) is paired up with the better golfer, between the two quarterbacks.

Manning, who retired at the end of the 2015 NFL season, after two Super Bowl victories and a record five NFL MVPs, has had a bit more time than Brady to practice his golf game. The former Colts and Broncos QB is believed to have a handicap of 6, while Brady — who is gearing up for his 21st season of professional football — is allegedly an 8.

Manning has already played alongside Woods in a couple of pro-am tournaments, including the Memorial and Wells Fargo Championship.

Brady played in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 2014, where he drained an eagle putt on the second hole. He also recently joined Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida, since he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Manning is a member of Augusta National.

Mickelson's recent form has been lacking. He has missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments, before the PGA postponed the season in mid-March. While he did beat Woods in the “The Match: Tiger vs. Phil,” it’s important to remember Woods is playing on his home course. Woods also finished in the top 10 in three of the four PGA Tour events he played in this season.  

How much money will 'The Match' raise? 

The four competitors, along with WarnerMedia, will combine to donate $10 million to COVID-19 relief. The competition will also feature a partnership with the ALL IN Challenge, plus on-course competitive challenges for charity.

Turner Sports will simulcast the event across TNT, TBS, truTV, and HLN. The Bleacher Report app will offer pre-round coverage.
